If the plot of Trek XI is what the various rumors and spoilers suggest
it is, then there really is no place for a larger role for Kirk. The
movie is just not about him in his old age.

No. The altered history has Harriman go down to modify the deflector
and getting Nexus'd. It's Harriman that Picard meets in the Nexus and
who gets killed by Soran. Everybody wins!
