Trek XI: Has The "Big E" Been Changed?

Star Trek New Voyages producer and Kirk actor James Cawley claims that
he has seen the starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701 from the upcoming
Star Trek movie and has confirmed that it has been redesigned and he
doesn't like it.

"I have seen the New REBOOTED Enterprise, I have Friends in the right
places! At any rate, I don't like it. It is supposed to be NCC-1701, no
bloody A,B,C,D or E! and it sure does not look like the 1701 I grew up
with!" he said

"I just don't agree with changing such iconic designs that are so
ingrained in pop culture, it is really needless."

"I just don't want the production design radically changed. I see Matt
Jefferies designs as "TIMELESS", and as "Pure Science Fiction", I feel
the Big E as designed by Matt deserves it's day on the big screen. I
personally Hope that this film makes a lot of money for the studio, and
that Star Trek is around for many more years because of it. If it fails
the alternative of Trek's Loss would Suck. All that aside, I do not have
to be a fan of the production design. I have seen what was purported to
be the final design of the New Enterprise, and I don't like the changes."

I've seen New Voyages, and Cawley's acting in particular, and I don't
like them either. His opinion is irrelevant.

This movie is going forward and will be made. We'll all be able to
bitch and moan about how lame it is once we actually have a chance to
see it. I don't give a tribble's gonad what some hack cheesy actor
thinks about a work in progress!

Right now, JJ Abrams is saying (assuming he's even paying attention) "Yeah.
NEXT!!!!"

Trek started getting stale with Voyager. TNG was interesting because it was
a reimagining of the Enterprise and it's crew. DS9 was interesting because
it was Trek without being TOTALLY like TNG or TOS...

The reimagined Battlestar Galactica is darker and grimmer than the
original, the reimagined Bionic Woman is darker and grimmer than the
original, etc.

Let's hope that Abrams didn't "reimagine" the Big E into something that
looks menacing and grim like this Phase II Enterprise.

I should have said "like this *preliminary sketch* for the Phase II
Enterprise." Roddenberry had rejected it and insisted on keeping the
basic shape of the Big E the same, leading to the design in the picture
you showed.
