I always liked the bickering between Scotty and Spock. I don't like
the stuff on the planet. Spock and McCoy were always arguing, which
was great material, but Scotty-Spock is different, since Scotty
doesn't have McCoy's old-fashioned prejudices.
One of my favorite lines of all Trek is, "I know what time it is, I
don't need a blooming cuckoo clock."

Scotty and Spock seem to respect and like each other generally. It's
unusual to see them at odds.

Spock was unusually abrasive and literal-minded in this episode (much as in
The Galileo Seven). Must be one of those Vulcan phases he goes through
every couple of years.

Actually, for a Vulcan, that is the default, not a phase.

I thought Spock came across as mean in Galileo Seven.
In That Which Survives, he and Scotty were just a riot.

But the difference is there's no animosity to the argument, they both
are basically trying to come to grips with what the real danger is.
Scotty doesn't think Spock is DOING something, but he doesn't have any
answers either really, and Spock is trying to remain calm in what is
potentially a terribly hopeless situation.

Nah, Spock was riding everyone in this episode. I don't know if I'd
say his abrasiveness was the default; he was really rather PMSy. And
Scotty had a few moments where I face-palmed and thought, "Don't give
him ammunition, dammit!" Though, him being all monologue in the
crawlway was a rare treat. And I adore that he was perfectly ready to
go and fearlessly crawl in there.

That was also true in "The Galileo Seven." Spock has never been
comfortable in command. He was fairly snippy, every time he's had to
take command. As Spock said in STII:TWOK, he's OK with taking command
as a *teacher* in a training exercise. (Which he did in "Corbomite
Maneuver.") But he's not OK with taking command in a life-threatening
combat situation for real.

Very true. Makes for a neat character study, really. It's always
struck me as deeply funny that the second officer spends more time in
command of the ship than the first officer, and probably almost as
much as the captain (what with Kirk going on all those away
missions)... who knows, maybe more.
