They don't think of themselves as better people, just better fans.
Wouldn't you say someone who is interested in the ideas and values (of any
series) a better fan than someone just interested in external appearances?

My recollection is somewhat different. The term "trekkie"
was originally science-fiction con speak, and was a
derisive term for people who attended the cons because
they liked Star Trek, but who were otherwise not particularly
fans of science fiction in general.

When the first Star Trek con opened, someone said, "the
trekkies have their own con now," and the media picked
up the term and ran with it, concentrating of course on the
fans with the rubber ears and...

I suppose one's perception is colored by which group
one belongs to. My reaction to "trekker" vs "trekkie"
is still, "ok, whatever," so I don't know which one best
fits me.

If you came across both terms together as I assume you did, that's
understandable. Since I was there before Trekker existed and know what
we used Trekkie for, and remember the TV Guide article coming out and my
telling my best friend that we were going to be living down the term
'Trekkie' for the rest of our lives, I'm fairly hard and fast on this.
Especially since TPM keeps insisting on telling the story - wrong.

BTW, the wikipedia article on trekkies says the first
Star Trek con was 1976, which is incorrect. I definitely
remember going to my first one while I was still in
college and I graduated before 1976.

No, I was there in pre-trekker days (NYC cons, 73-76).
It's just that being called a trekkie never particularly
bothered me, possibly because I never actually owned
a pair of rubber ears (I wonder what an original set
would worth on eBay if I had one now) . And I only
went to one more con after getting out of school
because I started working and saving up to buy my
own basement. :)
