I heard the term years before TNG.

I started this thread by pointing out that a guy who dubbed himself
"Spocko" and who calls his website "Spocko's brain" is no doubt a
Trekkie. He is not a Trekker. He's a Trekkie. I am not a Trekker, I'm
a Trekkie.

I know what I am, and I know a Trekkie when I see one. Call yourselves
what you like, but don't call me a Trekker. Original fans are Trekkies,
and Trekkers came later.

Trekkers called themselves Trekkers because they looked down on Trekkies
and wished to distinguish/distance themselves from us. THAT DIDN'T COME
FROM ME. I did not create that mindset, I was a victim of it.

That kind of "We are better Trek fans than you" mentality did not arise
from the Trekkies. I did not invent it. I personally think it's
un-Treklike. I personally feel that Trekkers are snobs who like to
think they are better than Trekkies. Yes, I resent and deplore it. I
dislike the term Trekker because for me it has negative connotations.

Yes, trekker is a proper English word that has been in play for
(possibly) centuries. It already had a commonly accepted meaning and
was commonly used long before TV was invented.
