If the actor is truly talented, they can cast off their well-known
character, and inhabit the role. It's a rare gift, though. When a
character is portrayed, the actor has a natural tendency to incorporate
his/her own body language, affectations, etc. This is why Shatner is seen
almost exclusively as Kirk - he had so many tics, as well as his pressured
delivery of his lines. The "Denny Crane" character is just a parody of
Kirk, IMO. Hilarious, but Kirk nevertheless (at least to me).

Nimoy sort of has that curse too, but he managed to overcome it a few times
("Never Forget").
