Question about Deltans

I've just started reading the TOS novels...the first one being the one
based on the original movie. The Deltan Ilia has just arrived and the
explanation about deltans leaves me a but wanting for more info...

Is Starfleet medical technology not sufficient to provide some sort of
prophlyactic against Deltan's pheromones? It doesn't seem logical that
everyone (of opposite gender) should suffer when a Deltan arrives
onboard..it seems like there should be a vaccination or somesuch...

Maybe blocking the humans' pheromone receptors has unhealthy side effects,
making it the proverbial "cure that is worse than the disease?" Just a
fanwank here, to my knowledge there is no official explanation.

If Deltan pheromones are the same as human pheromones (though MUCH more
concentrated and stronger), then blocking all such pheromones would be
the equivalent of chemical castration. Any dose strong enough to block
the level of Deltan pheromones would surely make hetero human men
totally uninterested in hetero human women too.

That's doable with the right meds too, but not something you normally do
to healthy normal human beings.
