A story written for the original Star Trek Phase II of the 1970s will be
filmed for the modern-day Star Trek: Phase II and directed by one of the
writers who originally wrote the story.
As reported by Star Trek: Phase II Jon Povill, whose history with Star
Trek stretches back to the 1970s, will be directing the next episode of
Star Trek: Phase II.
The Child, written by Povill and Jaron Summers, was originally written
to have Ilia (Star Trek: The Motion Picture) impregnated by an alien.
This storyline was not used in Star Trek: The Motion Picture but was
recycled for Star Trek: The Next Generation, where Deanna Troi took the
place of Ilia as the mother-to-be. In this most recent incarnation of
The Child, a Deltan will be the woman impregnated, as in the original
version of the story.
Coming in to the original Star Trek: Phase II back in the 1970s, Povill
was "assistant to the producer," after which he became story editor. He
co-wrote the Phase II series "bible" with Gene Roddenberry and was the
associate producer for Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
