Fave Captains List and Why

With absolutely NO desire to start a flame-war, here;s mine, in order:

Kirk- IMHO, the yardstick by which all other captains are measured... it
also lends credance to my theory that your first Trek is your favorite Trek.
Kick the door in, phaser the first person you see and ask "Who's in charge?"

Janeway- A surprise, I'm sure, but long about the third season or so (when
all the crew-wide "I'm so homesick" whining finally stopped), it seemed as
though TPTB told the writers, "Put 'Janeway's' name in the script, but write
it as though it were 'Kirk'!"

Archer- Helps to be a huge Bakula fan! Really enjoyed the wide-eyed
exuberance of the early season, then the metamorphosis brought about by the
third season arc. Started out as a very likable "team captain" then turned
into an incredibly capable Captain (capital C)... who, sadly, tended to get
beat up a tad too much.

Picard- Never bought him as anything more than a man tending the big chair
until an Admiralty was offered him... until he told Starfleet to stand down
when they tried to tak Lal and then became Worf's "second". Like the actor,
like the character, not my favorite captain.

Okay, there's mine... where's YOUR list?

Dough, please don't take this the wrong way but..... THAT IS THE WORST
LIST of TREK CAPTAINS I have ever seen! I'd be shocked if anyone in the
known world will agree with you on any but one.

My list with no explanations or apologies:

1. Picard
1a. Kirk

None of the others really count do they? Would you want any of the other
3 for your captain when you're up against it?

Station Commander:
Sisko. More of a governor than a starship captain. Belongs in a different
ranking, less touchy than Sarek, hints of the warmth of Mudd without Mudd's
obsequiousness, better at handling unethical twerps like Quark than Janeway.
A better friend than Archer with Janeway's sense of command and personal
rigor. Were he primarily a starship captain? He'd be at the top of the list,
as he was more of a governor? He's mentioned as a footnote without ranking
but with the greatest overall skill base.

Starship Captains:
Pike. He inspired greater loyalty in Spock than Spock's loyalty to Kirk.
That says something right there. Not to mention he took a whole 50 minutes
to jump Vina's bones. Kirk was usually sucking face with the alien girl by
the second commercial.

Kirk. Besides sucking face with the alien girl by the second commercial, he
gave his stunt double the opportunity to take his shirt off at least every
third episode (it's hot during production season in Hollywood, and Desi
Arnaz was cheap with the air conditioning (which is why everyone looks all
sweaty in TOS). A good fizzbin player who wasn't above bending the rules for
the greatest common good.

Janeway : She's a woman and it shows and she can do all the other
actions too. She knows how to delegate responsabilities.

Picard : very regal. At least, he lets other do the dirty jobs (away
missions...)

Kirk : Umpredictable. Who could think a ship would send the three most
importants officers to do a job ?

Sisco; Archer : well, they're captains, that's all they have for them.

There are various views on Brooks' disdain for Star Trek. Bottom line, fans
and fan press have made it bigger than it is. I do not believe he dislikes
Trek, the character he played, or the time he spent doing DS9. He just
wasn't as enthusiastic as some of his predecessors about it .. If you know
differently, post a link ..

I feel your premis is wrong in the sense you're looking at things that are
actually external to the show. For example, whether Brooks dislikes Trek. So
what? How was he as Sisko. (BTW, I don't think Brooks HATES Trek, he just
took Shatner's advice from his SNL bit and got a life. I just get the
feeling that Trek isn't the end all for Brooks).

As for my ranking:

1. Sisko: The un-TNG era captain. Not as much into the touchy-feely pc side
of the Trekverse. Can you see Janeway doing what Sisko did in bringing in
the Romulans into the Dominion war? Maybe Kirk or Archer would, but
certainly nobody from the TNG era shows.

2. Kirk: Archer came first chronologically, but Jimbo is the standard for
which all follow. Kirk came before this political correctness came in, so,
as Janeway said, Kirk got away with stuff that probably couldn't be done
later on.

My least favorite(s):

1. Janeway. Wrong for so many reasons. To whom is a captain first
responsible? The ship and it's crew, not some backwater species on the way
side of the galaxy. And having a woman captain for the sake of just doing so
is questionable.

2. Picard: OK, I don't DISLIKE him so much as I think he's the anti-Kirk.
Kirk was a doer while Picard was a thinker and a talker. Maybe that was his
stratagy against the Borg: bore them into submission...

James T. Kirk (the 'first', the best).
Chistopher Pike (the actual first, but never got past the first pilot ep).
Benjamin Sisko (the best of all New Trek, as bad ass as they come).
Jean-Luc Picard (had his moments).
Will Decker (too green he seemed).
Kathryn Janeway (because Archer can't be better than she is)
Jonathan Archer (because he makes me long for Janeway)
