Darker Tone in New Trek

There's a poll on Trekmovie.com about whether the new Trek should be
darker in tone than the other movies.

I'm of the opinion that it should. In all honesty the hopeful Utopian
Trek future doesn't look so plausible in today's world.

I hope it is, as well. Much more interesting.

Also, I was hoping that young Spock wouldn't have such good control of his
emotions, and maybe get into trouble.

Inevitably the characters will be more dimensional, more flawed, more
ambiguous. J.J. Abrams likes it that way. He's not the eternal
optimist about Man's future that Roddenberry was. And Roddenberry
didn't like major conflicts to erupt among regular characters. Abrams
clearly does, judging by his other works.

I say it shouldn't. I just saw Dark Knight, and like many modern films
it suffered terribly both from a relentlessly depressing tone, and
serverely underlit scenes.

We are not dogs: we don't see everything in black and white. I want
light, I want color, and I want a happy ending.

And for GOD'S SAKE ~shave ALL the men~.

What is interesting about doing the same damn thing that everybody else
is doing?

Star Trek wasn't like any other show, why should a Trek movie fall prey
to the same follies of other modern films?

Hey! TPTB!

1) Turn on the lights
2) Show us some color
3) Have a happy ending
4) Shave all the men

ST VI: The Undiscovered Country was really the first time we got to see
the Federation portrayed in a less noble way. There was corruption,
there was militarism, there was even racism. And that script had to be
approved over Roddenberry's vehement objections.

Yet it was the very moral ambiguity of that movie that made it appealing
to me, in a way that more straightforward stories like ST IV were not.
