"Constitution Class" existed as *a* reference in TOS.
It was used on one or two "technical manuals" that
were put on monitor screens in "Space Seed" and
"Trouble with Tribbles." But FJ's book of plans and
TOS technical manual were the first places that I can
recall it being said that the *Enterprise* belonged to
that class. As previously noted, Matt Jeffries' line art
drawings (one of which was used onscreen in
"Enterprise Incident") and the plaque on the bridge
set identify the Enterprise as "Starship Class," and
anytime "starship" was used in dialog it was treated
as if it was something really special.
