this is not a spoiler, although i wish it was. this could have had potential
1936
Somewhere in Earth orbit, three escape pods eject from the saucer section of
the USS Enterprise. The Enterprise tumbles hopelessly into the Earth's
atmosphere. The anti-matter chamber from the engineering section breaks away
and tumbles down to the Earth's surface while the rest of the ship
disintegrates in the atmosphere. Several more life pods eject from the great
ship as it disintegrates into the Earth's atmosphere.
1908
Krasnoyarsk Krai (Tunguska) Russia 7:40 AM. A horrific explosion occurs near
the Podkamennaya River. A glow can be seen for miles turning night into day
in the surrounding cities. In the forest the force of the explosion ripples
through space opening a gap into time itself completely absorbing the matter
that the Enterprise has left behind. Then disappears leaving only flattened
trees as it's only evidence.
1870
A young man emerges from a life pod in a forest near region of Hungary. The
pod remains intact as he emerges from the pod. He examines the computers and
makes several calculations with his tricorder. As a scientist he has
determined that he has traveled back in time. 'What?' he states to himself.
He looks up at the night sky knowing that all of the events he has
experience have not happened yet. Knowing he could never return he sets the
life pod power down. He finds a small town outside of Budapest and manages
to make acquaintance's with the locals. His universal translator is his only
hope, he sets himself up for his new life. Knowing that he must stay clear
of history but he can not resist the temptation. He would keep a diary of
his life, writing down his every thought about his past and the present day.
He makes his way into Budapest in 1880. He meets a young man named Nikola.
They became close friends and would meet every day in the city park having
long discussions. One day walking through the city park they are both held
at gun point and robbed. One shot was fired and the young scientist is dead.
His only possession was a diary he kept with him. Nikola has taken ownership
of this.
1943
62 years later Nikola dies alone in a New York hotel having only his friends
diary as his only possession on him. Within a few days, the diary
disappears.
1955
A young Police officer name Eugene strolls through a neighborhood on petrol,
happens to walk past by a rummage sale in Los Angles. Always seeking out new
ideas he decides to look and comes across a old book covered in wax and
dusty. He thinks to himself what a oddity. The elderly women hosting this
sale states this was her late friends and she has had this for many years.
"It's a wonder know one has ever removed the wax" she states. Eugene buys
the book. At home he carefully removes the wax and begins to read with
amazement. This is the story of a scientist who is unknown in history. He
writes in no certain time line a story of history not yet made. He reads
through the faded handwriting with amazement. There is no name on the diary
or dates in the book. It is a story of a naval battle, but in space.
1961
Eugene sits down in a chair with a type write in front of him and begins to
type slowly. He begins to write this story
Space... is the final frontier. This is their voyage...
Some where in deep space a faded emission of light turns into be a massive
pulsating plasma sweeping through space in ever changing patterns. A
darkened and lifeless ship is suspended within the plasma. In this ship are
the mangled lifeless decomposing bodies of it's crew. Without cause or
reason, they begin to reanimate, heal and slowly come back to life within
the ship. It's Captain, Kirk, appears in the command chair. He clearly
remembers the sensation of having died. As final members of the crew have
materialized, he can tell that several members of his crew are missing.
on Vulcan
Spock is in a meditative state. He opens his eyes. Slowly becomes aware of
his friend and softly says "Jim?". He becomes troubled by memories of his
former life and particularly strange is that he has not had such thoughts in
years. He walks outside of his dwelling just out side of his ancestral
tribes city. He looks into the night time sky, a dark red sky filled with
bright stars. Again he whispers "Jim".
In an attempt to more fully understand what has happened, Kirk has ship log
played back. He learns that the ship has been evolved in a time gap in
space. His science officer Spock, chief engineer Scott and a young science
officer jettisoned from the great vessel moments from the end of his last
log entry. A sudden surge of energy, they assume is how the vessel and her
crew met their demise.
The final members of the crew have materialized. The mass of plasma which
had surrounded the ship abruptly disappears. Full ship scans indicate that
somehow every aspect of the vessel has been dramatically restored. Kirk
orders a full scan of space and surrounding area. Navigator Chekov is at the
science station. He is able to determine with no uncertainty that they had
been dead for more than 300 years. He compounds the bad news by announcing
that he cannot begin to determine their exact location in time or space.
Kirk orders Uhura to raise Starfleet Command. Static is their only response.
They are shocked to find that there are no traces of any the Starbases. As
time goes on they encounter a Rigelian starship, whose captain does not
recognize the Star Ship. Kirk tells the Rigelian Captain he is the commander
of the Federation ship Enterprise. The Rigelian Captain informs Kirk that
there are no Star Ships from Earth and Earth has never been a part of the
Federation of Planets. The Rigelian Captain accuses Kirk to be a unknown
invading force and begins to fire upon them. In the ensuing battle the
Enterprise manages to disable the Rigelian ship.
Kirk growing more confused by the moment, excuses himself to his captains
office. Contemplating the words of the Rigelian and pondering the fate of
Spock. He becomes aware of his old friends presence. Should he divert to the
ship to Vulcan? The ships doctor, McCoy, enters his office and confronts
him. The doctor suggest that they proceed straight to Earth. Reluctantly the
captain agrees.
Returning to the bridge, Kirk thinks to himself out load that if the
Rigelian statement was even half truth it would be more logical to head to
Vulcan. He decides to order a course to Vulcan. McCoy feels that this is
"ill advised" but the captain points out that there had occasionally been a
"telepathic" link between himself and Spock and for this reason Kirk
seriously believes that his friend is alive on Vulcan. More importantly,
Spock may hold some clue as to what had happened to them.
They are able to go into Vulcan orbit without being detected. Chekov, is
able to pick up a signal from a federation tricorder, accesses its
registered owner and is able locate Spock. Kirk beams down to his cell like
quarters. Despite the fact that Spock has such a difficult time with emotion
he smiles and is genuinely pleased to see his old friend. Both Kirk and
Spock attempt to figure out exactly what is going on. They know that somehow
their universe has been altered. Spock deduces that the mission they
previously been on has had something to do with the "time gap". The theory
is that somehow time has shifted, which is why no one has ever recognized
Spock or the Enterprise and there has never been any friendly contact
between Earth and Vulcan. If this theory is correct Kirk wonders aloud, how
did Spock survive? According to the Spock a anti-matter explosion of the
Enterprise warp core may have created a tiny time gap in the space time
continuum and individuals who exited in the life pods may have been
protected from time shifts before the singularity closed.
They beam aboard the Enterprise which breaks orbit but not before they are
able to out race a squadron of Vulcan cruisers. When they arrive to Earth,
there is absolutely no sign of Starfleet Command. Uhura manages to tap into
a video broadcast. A futuristic design fills the main screen. Awesome
buildings fill the screen with a hint of Klingon influence. Yet it looks as
if they are in the mid 20th century. To Kirk however it is a travesty. The
city is nothing as it had been. The people are uniformly dressed and the
city itself is a conglomeration of structures lacking the beauty of the 23rd
Century he had known. Dirty, dusty and gray.
Chekov tabs into a communications record database. He finds a name that is
very familiar. A scientist. Beaming down to the edge of the city they manage
find this scientists who takes in Kirk and Spock. Kirk asks the gentleman's
name. Daystrum he states. Kirk takes note of the planet's surface. Covered
with a vast ugly urban sprawl. A discussion starts with the scientist who
reluctantly gives them a description of his world. "A populated race of
mindless automatons" he states "who do nothing but eat, sleep and perform
their designated functions within a social order". Kirk ask if he knows of a
scientist named Scott. The Daystrum informs him that a historical figure
named Scott had work in a unspecified laboratory near Munich in the distant
past. He had left behind the great mediator. This is the only information he
had. Spock asks who the great mediator is. Daystrum looks at him with a
saddened expression and says "That is the question which may get you killed.
We ask no such questions out in public". Kirk explains to the scientist that
they are from a alternate time line and Daystrum easily accepts this. He too
has been studying for years anomalies he had discovered in his research of
physics. "Quantum Mathematics can not lie" he states. "It merely opens the
mind to what must be the truth, nothing more" Kirk invites him to the
Enterprise. All of them beam back aboard, where they discusses and theorize
that Scott himself might have been the source of the time shift. Spock
deduces that they must find this mediator.
Kirk and Spock beam back down to the capital's hall of records, with the
intent to steal information. Spock begins to tap into one of the main frame
computer cores with his tricorder to study the information within it. He
learns, at least in theory, that they must go back to 1933 Earth and stop
Scott from altering history. Spock states the trip could be successful but
the ship's power has been drained to the point if they go back they will be
unable to travel back to the future. Before the could beam back to the
Enterprise, several large men wearing Klingon garments approach them stating
they have no authorization and begin to beat them. Spock manages to contact
the ship and is able to have himself and Kirk beamed back aboard. Mean
while, Uhura has been sending a signal on all Starfleet frequencies and
finally receives a faint response. It is a automated response from the life
pod some where in what was once a forest near Hungary, which validates Spock's
theory that the Enterprise and it's crew are immune to the time shifts.
Spock calculates for time travel. He tells the captain that because of the
time shift that his calculations would not be constant. "With out a definite
projection in the space time continuum I can not guarantee my accuracy" Kirk
looks at him. "I trust your guess more than I do my facts, Mr. Spock". They
arrive in the mid 20th century.
Adorned in appropriate clothing for the time period, Kirk and Spock beam
down to a Munich. Everything looks notably different than what they
expected. Cars have electric motors, people's clothing differ slightly and
the whole pace and tone of the city is slower than they expected thus
illustrating that some alterations have already taken place. Spock notes
"Jim, we have missed the target year". They walk around the city and
discover a replica monument commemorating the initial appearance of the
Mediator in 1933. Kirk makes a observation of a news paper stand. Picks one
up. "1961" he says out load. "28 years too late".
According to people who would talk to them, the Great Mediator brought peace
and optimism to the world. He cured diseases and fed the hungry. The
"Mediator" could be found at the League of Nations headquarters in Geneva.
Spock takes note that no one is concerned of there presence. They were also
quite a shocked that World War II had never taken place. Kirk, who was a
amateur historian himself states "it has seem that Scotty has altered
history to an incredible degree."
They beam over to Geneva, Kirk manages to find and meet with a robust
Winston Churchill, who denies him access to Scott. Surpassingly Churchill is
not shocked by Kirks presence or with is consistent questions concerning
Scott. Kirk is quite concerned that Churchill knows of him. He continuously
questions him only to discover that the great Mediator is a computer which
was reportedly a gift from Scott who left instructions on how to use it. A
committee of world leaders and scientists have work on it themselves and
also learned its secrets.
With little choice Kirk and Spock go back to the Enterprise where they
decide to beam all of committee aboard so that they can explain their
position. Moments later they beam up to their own amazement Josif Stalin,
Adolf Hitler, John F. Kennedy, Eleanor Roosevelt and Albert Einstein and are
all overwhelmed to be there. Kirk explains to them who he is and where they
are. He conducts a tour ultimately explaining that Scott's must be returned
to the proper time.
Kirk goes before the committee pleading for the opportunity to meet with
Scott. They must have no objections and he must have a direct communication
with Scott. Adolph Hitler argues that he is needed here and given the fact
that Scott is now an old man he can be of no use to the Enterprise. Hitler
demands to know Kirk's true motives. Using Spocks tricorder as evidence the
captain finally explains that Scott is responsible for altering the future
and has no choice but to show historical data of what should have occurred
between the years 1933 and 1963. They witness World War II, Hitler's
involvement of the holocaust, the Americans use of the atomic bomb, Stalin's
murderess Soviet Union, Mao Zedong communist China and the spread war in
Asia, Kennedy's own assassination. Daystrum adds because of the great
achievement of world peace and the cooperation space exploration this allows
the discovery of space warp, which in turn leads them some how to a untimely
war with the Romulans before the year 2063 and the death of over two thirds
of the human race. This makes the humans too weak to defend against Klingon
conquerors. The committee are all horrified by what unfolds.
"Granted this is an awful prospect" Kirk states "progress must be made one
step at a time by a great number of individuals. Mankind will finally
correct these horrors on his own without the intervention of a Mediator." He
adds that "the Mediator is a product of the history it has wiped out.
Because of Scott's interference, this world has made themselves slaves to a
computer. The only way to prevent the world from being enslaved by any
conquerors you must allow me to meet with Scott."
Hitler is suspicious, pointing out that Kirk would not have made such a
perilous journey simply to renew an old friendship. He refuses pointing out
that they will not allow their age of splendor to become like the one they
saw on the viewing screen. The committee members agree. Kirk, unsure on his
next move reluctantly returns the leaders back to Earth except for Kennedy
who wishes to stay behind. Kennedy later tells Kirk that he agrees with him
and despite the fact a time alteration would claim billions of lives, and
ultimately this would include his own life. He agrees to give Kirk the
location of Scott's hideaway in the South Pacific. Kirk is impressed by
Kennedy's wisdom. Kirk states "Mr. President, I don't know of any other way
around this." Kennedy looks at him "Captain, if logic out weighs the good of
the many, then the sacrifice of the few shall not be in vain." Kirk returns
Kennedy back to Earth.
Upon reaching the island and overcoming guards, Kirk, Spock and McCoy go to
a beautiful palace where they meet with a considerably older Scotty, a man
who has become accustomed to his great authority. His bearing is dignified
and wise. He quickly recovers from his shock at seeing the trio and explains
that when the ship exploded, he escaped in a life pod. Something went wrong
and he found himself surrounded by German soldiers who immediately attacked
him. He was forced to stun them with his phaser to escape. He tried to
survive for months in the forest but could not.
In time he found himself in a awful position of having to trade scientific
information for food and equipment. He only wanted to get back home but as a
result, he changed history. Most notably the fact that the worlds arsenal
was more powerful than it should have been at the time. Feeling intense
obligation, he had to make sure those weapons were never used. As time went
on, he realized history had already been changed to the point where all he
could do was hope that all the changes would be for the better. Following
through with this he helped developed potent medicines and agricultural
systems saving lives and eliminating famine. Kirk tells him about the
future. Rather than feeling regret, Scotty explains, he could use this
knowledge to alter even that time period. Spock disagrees, stating that they
must return to 1933 and correct history. Scotty states "I can not go".
Stating that his old age would be of no use but he gives Kirk something to
help him achieve the task at hand. Dilithium crystals he had manage to
create in his laboratory. He reason with the captain to go back in time and
destroy the life pod, the time line would correct itself correcting reality
and the changes would cease to exist in the space time dimensional plane.
Spock agrees stating to Scott "Your logic is without flaw".
Kirk, Spock and McCoy beam back aboard the Enterprise and begin their
journey. Unfortunately Enterprise's engines have weakened to the point that
it's engines can no longer maintain the anti matter containment. Sweeping
through time the ship fires it's phasers and destroy the specified target. A
moment later, the Enterprise itself explodes.
Back to 1961
Eugene concludes his story. Reflecting back at this old wax soaked book with
torn pages and faded lettering. He takes a blank piece of paper, feeds it
into the typewriter and types in bold letters on the page...
STAR TREK: BY GENE RODDENBERRY
2245
Some 284 years later, a Constitution class Star Ship is being assembled in
the San Francisco shipyards under the watchful eye of its Chief designer
Robert April, a future captain himself. In a shuttle pod, a aging Jonathan
Archer is having his first look at this newly designed Starship. He is
accompanied with a brilliant engineer and close associate of Robert April
named George Kirk, who is giving the tour. Only one nacelle been fitted on
the great ship, the other has yet to be fitted. The saucer section is under
construction. The main engineering section is complete. Archer is very
pleased. "The U.S.S. Enterprise" Archer states out load. "This is why the
lord has kept me around all of these years"
2264
Travel farther into the future in the proper time frame of the 23rd Century
several Star Ships are being constructed in space dock. The Enterprise is
going through another refit.
Back on Earth, a younger Captain Kirk, Commander Mitchell and Lt. Spock and
the rest of the bridge crew are at Starfleet Command awaiting a shuttle.
Spock looks around him with curiosity. His telepathic ability gets the
better of himself and thinks out loud to his new Captain "My time gap
calculations must be mistaken. A investigation will not be necessary". Kirk
looks at Spock with a confused expression shaking and rubbing his forehead
feeling the effects from the night before. "Are you sure Vulcan's can't
suffer from the effects of hangovers?" Kirk looks between his fingers at
Spock, Mitchell laughs and pats Kirk on the back. "Don't worry Jim, Vulcans
are harmless creatures. If there was such a thing as a hangover for Vulcans
I'm sure it would be quite logical experience." Spock holds his ground
looking blankly at Kirk showing a slight irritation and raising one eyebrow.
The Enterprise and its newly commissioned crew are preparing for their first
mission. They all board a shuttlecraft and take a tour of a much simpler
Enterprise. Fleet Captain Pike and Admiral April greet them in the hanger
deck, where a ceremony concludes a transfer of command.
Later in the captains corridors, Kirk is joined by Spock and Dr. Piper. Kirk
asked Spock what he stated just before they boarded the shuttle. Spock
responds that he would simply be attentive to accuracy and be diligent to
with his job as his chief science officer when providing information. Spock
states his loyalty "I shale always be yours to command..." Kirk smiles at
Spock.
Back on the bridge Kirk sits in his captains chair and makes a statement to
his bridge crew "As a great man by the name of Zefram Cochrane once
stated... To boldly go where no man has gone before" he then orders
helmsman Kelso to engage.
Exit the Enterprise into space.
