"Star Trek" Actor Gets An Asteroid Named After Him
October 2, 2007 9:35 p.m. EST
Nidhi Sharma - AHN News Writer

New York, NY (AHN) - George Takei, the actor best known for his role in
"Star Trek" series, has been immortalized in the celestial world with
his name permanently affixed to an asteroid between Mars and Jupiter.

The asteroid, formerly known as the 1994 GT9, has been renamed 7307
Takei in honor of the actor, who is best known for his role as Hikaru
Sulu in the original series.

The Committee on Small Body Nomenclature of the International
Astronomical Union that approved the name said that the Takei reference
will be used in the scientific community to identify the asteroid.

It's interesting that the only two cast members with asteroids are the
two that never got a major personal subplot for their character.
Chekhov had "Way to Eden," Chapel had "What Are Little Girls Made
Of?", Scotty had "Lights of Zetar" but Sulu and Uhura only had moments
here and there within episodes (i.e., Tribbles, Naked Time, Uhura's
singing, Mirror Mirror) but obviously made maximum impact. Any I
didn't think of?
