are books canon?

I just read "Death in Winter", the first ST book I have read. It is a TNG
book and takes place just after where the latest movie left off. It is full
of spelling and grammer mistakes, and I am by no means a spelling nazi :-)

Anyways, is this stuff considered canon? I assume it will be fully ignored
(which is fine by me) if they ever make another TNG movie?

Gene always said that if it didn't happen on-screen, it wasn't canon... then
he contradicted himself by saying only two of the animated eps were canon!

To me, it's ALL fiction, so the concept of "canon" is fairly moot. I choose
to believe Shatner's Trek novels "really" happened since he came up with a
far superior Kirk storyline than we've ever seen before!

Here's the scoop: as far as the creators are concerned, only the live action
stuff is cannon (the tv shows and the movies), although there were things
that Roddenberry was supposed to have regretted doing, such as Star Trek VI:
The Final Frontier. For the most part, the other stuff isn't, although there
are things from the Animated Series and the books that have caught on into
the live action stuff. Kirk's middle name, Tiberius, had been floating
around way before it was first mentioned in Undiscovered Country (as had
Sulu's first name, Hikuru).

No, they are not canon. Mostly.
