"Lost" Is Turning Into "Star Trek" (Unfortunately)

Overall, I am disappointed with the general turn of events in Season 3
of "Lost." The producers had said that they were going for a more
straightforward, less mythological, approach this season. But I think
that's removed a lot of the wonder and philosophical speculation that
made Lost so different. And that may have contributed to the erosion in
viewership in the ratings and to the decline in overall "water-cooler buzz."

This season, what do we have? The Others, who have now been revealed to
be middle-class American folks living in a modern suburban town on the
island, have captured Jack and Sawyer and Kate and are forcing them to
do various degrading things, while our heroes try to figure out how to
escape. That reminds me of various mediocre Star Trek episodes: A
bunch of humanoid aliens capture Captain Jack, Lt. Sawyer, and Yeoman
Kate and are making them jump thru hoops while they figure out how to
escape. "Lost" Season 3 could be "The Gamesters of Triskelion" or
"Plato's Stepchildren" or "The Empath". And those aren't even
considered to the the best Star Trek episodes by most Trek fans.

I think it's a bit too early on to give up hope.

If the Lost producers are reading this, they're probably thinking, "We
just can't please anyone."

- During Season 2, the viewers were complaining that there were not
enough answers.
- Now in season 3, the viewers are complainiing "too many answers".
- I suspect the viewers don't really know what they want.
.

Referring to another serial called Babylon 5, that show, like Lost,
started with a lot of mystery. But eventually the mystery went away
(end-of-season 2), and then B5 focused on the *real* story... defeating
the enemy and restoring peace.

POINT: You can't keep Lost a mystery forever. At some point, you have
to have answers, so the characters can focus on the Real story:
beating-down whatever's trapped them on the island & escaping.

If it's becoming modern Star Trek, the first episode isn't too soon to
give up.
