They "walked in" in the original footage too. We're just seeing them
walk in from a different perspective now, giving the surroundings a
feel reminiscent of the Vulcan we saw in ST:TMP and ST3:TSFS. They
also tossed in an updated shot of the same Vulcan city that we saw in
ST:TAS.
Too bad they couldn't do anything about the horrible red sky in all
the other live action shots, but that would have taken months...
