INSTANT 49ers
Matt Maiocco heads into his 13th season covering the 49ers. He has
reported for The Press Democrat since 2000. He is a three-time winner
of Pro Football Writers of America awards. Maiocco has written two
books, "Roger Craig's Tales from the 49ers Sideline" and "San
Francisco 49ers: Where Have You Gone?" His blog, "Instant 49ers,"
gives readers an all-access pass to the 49ers.

I'd like to clarify something I wrote yesterday about Donnie
Henderson, who interviewed for the defensive coordinator's job. Nolan
said he has not closed the door on anybody as a candidate for the
position. Henderson has a unique, confrontational personality that
Nolan acknowledges would not work with every staff. He coached
together with Henderson in Baltimore, and they did not always see
eye-to-eye.

"The dynamics are different," Nolan said. "That was Baltimore and
everybody knew Donnie and understood Donnie. I'd be bringing him in
and not everybody knows him. He's a good coach, but I have to be
careful with the dynamics of the staff."

Nolan addressed why he did not offer the defensive coordinator
position to Dave Campo. He said he felt rushed because of the window
he agreed upon with Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio. Nolan had permission
to speak to Campo on the condition that he make a decision by
Wednesday.

"I know I have to fill that job, but I'm not in a hurry to do it,"
Nolan said. "Just assessing the whole thing, I feel rushed. I got some
of my own coaches who are looking at jobs and I have to look at the
big picture. If I happen to lose somebody else, whether it's a (Mike)
Singletary, it would change the complexion of the staff.

"And if that happens, I want to make sure I got the thing right and
not be in the position where I say, 'If I'd known that would happen, I
would've done this.' I want to make sure I get it right."

Nolan said there have been inquiries around the league about
Singletary, Turner and WR coach Jerry Sullivan, but the requests to
speak with those coaches have not been formal.

"It's no one from a specific team, just people I know," Nolan said.

Nolan said he has not received a request from the Cowboys to interview
Turner or Singletary for the job to replace the retired Bill Parcells.
However, something could happen as early as Thursday.
