Niners tumble toward NFL oblivion

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - No happy talk this Sunday. No cheerleading about
never quitting. No peewee-level trophies awarded for trying hard.
If the 49ers have been taking baby steps up from the NFL's basement,
then Sunday was a tumble back down the stairs. Back into NFL oblivion.
In one of the ugliest games in their long history, the 49ers were
barbecued and fricasseed, seared on one side of the ball and scorched on
the other.
They lost to the Kansas City Chiefs - a team without a win, without its
starting quarterback and without a touchdown since Week 1 - by the
eye-popping score of 41-0. It was the most lopsided shutout in 49ers
history and only the second time the team has been held scoreless in 29
years.
It was, in a word, embarrassing.
That's what Antonio Bryant called it. And Alex Smith agreed.
