I STILL think that was the ONLY play call to make in this situation.

What I DONT understand is why the fuck the attempts to get the ball
downfield when they had 90 seconds
to go and near midfiled? Shit Holmy... move it 4-5 yds a whack. They
were close to get into Josh's range
to begin with! Stupid offensive execution. Overtime we go...

Alas, no, Holmgren still hasn't quite figured out when to do this and
when not to. Punt them deep and with their wobbly QB you still have a
good chance to get the ball back at midfield, or get a turnover or
safety. It was the wrong time to go for fourth and almost two yards.

Unless it worked.

Which it didn't, and we were unable to ever consistently convert
third-and-short all year, so it was somewhat of a nonsensical decision.
So, for those of us (like myself) who wondered *before the play was
run* what the fuck Holmgren was doing by not punting, it's not
second-guessing, it's actually complaining about a stupid decision.

I'm not sure lack of success on short yardage plays 7 weeks ago
meant much yesterday. Different players, playing differently.
The coaches know how they practice and how they've been
playing as of late. They've been making more of them
recently.
I guess the coaches and players lack some of
the cynicism of the expert fanbase.

On further reflection, I agree. Every single decision the coaches make
is a good one, regardless of how it works out. The fact that the
Seahawks are getting ready to face the Saints in the NFC Championship
Game bears this out.
Hopefully the coaches and players retain that spirit of unbridled
optimism next year, so we can see the defensive line racking up six
sacks a game, the corners making picks left and right, and Hasselbeck
firing deep bombs for touchdowns on every drive with that rocket arm of
his. Of course, an "expert fan" might say that the players on the team
don't actually have the *ability* to do those particular things, but so
long as we remain optimistic, anything's possible, right?
I can only hope Holmgren decides to go for it on every single fourth
down next year, distance be damned, in the spirit of not being
"cynical."

Not every play works. That doesn't mean that the call was
incorrect at the time it was made.
