Dino was supposed to start this thread, but I beat him to it.
The way I see it is that Super Bowl appearances (and wins for that matter)
are a rare and special thing. So this seems to me to be a one-step-at-a-time
proposition.
First, you should have superior talent. People that are faster and stronger.
This is almost impossible in the Age of Parity, but you try to get it if you
can. One way to get ahead quickly is by drafting suprising rookies, so your
team needs to have excellent scouts and evaluation ability. That's a front
office thing.
Second, you need better execution from these players. Something more
consistent than the next team. Again, these are all professionals. They've
played the game for years. For the most part, they know what to do and when
to do it. But it's not as much a given in all cases. Some teams will do
better than others and that's a reflection on the coaching staff. So you
need coaching that knows how to get there.
