Shelmon to become coordinator

By Kevin Acee
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

January 24, 2007

MOBILE, Ala. – Moving to replace one coordinator before they possibly
could lose another, the Chargers, according to numerous sources
yesterday, have chosen running backs coach Clarence Shelmon to be their
new offensive coordinator.

The compensation had not been agreed upon as of late last night, but the
contract is expected to be completed today.

Meanwhile, Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips awaits word that
he is officially a candidate for the Dallas Cowboys head coach's job.

While speculation is rampant that Phillips and former Chargers and
current San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner are
front-runners for the job vacated Monday by Bill Parcells, the Chargers
have yet to receive the obligatory request from the Cowboys to speak to
Phillips.

Good thing Marty stayed. The continuity is *so* important.

It's a compliment to a team's system when the assistants are getting
hired away. Bellichick, for instance, lost Crennel, Mangini and Weiss
to head coaching jobs in 2 years.

It's a measure of respect from the rest of the football world. You
probably won't see a lot of Raider coaches advancing this year.

Hell the Raiders just had to give their head coaching job to a 12-year-old
college assistant because nobody else was stupid enough to take it.
