I know that Sunday isn't all his fault. But if he doesn't get canned
after that, in conjunction with '04 vs. the Jets, I honestly don't know
how a guy gets fired in this league.
And now, he is a one and done coach next year. Great. That should be
an inspiration...

Speaking of things that are utterly inexplicable, how is it that 75%% of
Charger fans (per the poll on KNSD's website) didn't think Marty should be
fired?
Sometimes I really fucking hate being a sports fan in this town.

Let me list the reasons:
1. 14-2. Fourteen and two does not suck.
2. Only one coach wins the Super Bowl. Should every other coach who
finishes the season on a losing note be fired?
3. The next coach is likely to be worse. New system, new assistants,
new schemes, new everything that may not fit this batch of players.
4. Mike Riley
5. Kevin Gilbride
6. Al Saunders
7. June Jones
8. Dan Hennig

This may have been addressed in a different thread, but with all the
trolling I haven't caught up yet (1500 new messages in 2 days on this
board!?!?!) But I just heard about Schotty staying this morning.
With Schotty coming back for his final year (*AND* declining an
extension), does anyone else feel that the Chargers are going to make a
run at Cowher after next year? And if they do, does anyone else think
that Cowher would accept the job if offered? Same philosophy. Same
school (Cowher came up under Schotty). Same track record (until last
year when Cowher blew it by winning the super bowl).
The only reason I say this is because I think Cowher would LOVE to
coach both Rivers and Tomlinson (especially after his remarks postgame
this year).

I am not usually "fire the coach" guy, as a knee jerk reaction anyway.
But I do have some problems with Marty coming back.
The biggest one is the stigma around him and the playoffs. I honestly
think its in his head. Its always brought up, its in every story, he
HAS to hear it. And I think its getting to him. I don't have any
proof, obviously, but I think a desire to shed the Martyball label this
year was in the back of his head. I further think its what led to the
perplexing 4th and 11 call. I don't really want the coach of my
favorite team to be working on exorcising his demons, know what I mean?
I want this team to have a bad taste in their mouth. I want the guys to
come back next year with a very business-like, no dancing, no crap
attitude. I want them to be focused on one goal all year. I don't want
to hear lips flapping about last year, I don't want to hear any run up
to the Pats game, I don't want to see any crap there. I want them to be
assassins next year. I don't think Marty is the coach for that.

So you're saying that every coach who doesn't win the Super Bowl should
be fired?

He's under contract to the Steelers for another year. Otherwise all the
teams with vacancies would be making a run at him. Duh.

Reductio ad absurdum.
I think what people are saying is that a coach who consistently can not
get their team to the next level in the playoffs is a legitimate
candidate for the unemployment line. It happens all the time to coaches
on the professional level.

Mmm hmmm. I know. But I also know that contracts are only as good as
the paper they are written on. In other words, the parties can agree to
rework them.
I just don't understand why the administration wants to sit for a year
spinning their wheels waiting for Cowher, if that is what they are doing.

The first person Cowher thanked in his resignation speech was Marty. If
the Chargers would have dumped Marty Cowher would not have picked up
their phone call. Obviously most around here are in favor of getting
rid of Marty. Do you all know better than the players who have been so
vocal in keeping him? Or are the players just full of shit and don't
know as much as some of you?
