I think it sucks that they're bringing him back. As soon as trouble
starts next year the whole Marty spectre will be with us again. It'd be
nice to think we'll win a Superbowl in his last year and all that but
life is not a fairy tale. More than likely he'll be a lame duck and the
team and fans will suffer. If he's going to be gone after next year
what's the point of bringing him back? The team won't be able to rebound
from the curse-just like the 05' one. It will take 2 years to get it all
back and by that time LT's peak might be on the downside. What a shame.
In truth Marty should have been fired after the Jets game.

But what makes you think Marty won't sabotage us in the playoffs again?
He's done it every time to every team he's coached. There is no
exception to this rule. So I'm just wondering, especially after he did
it again less then a week ago, I'm really wondering where you get this
faith from? Or is it just an educated guess? I'm not screwing with you
swillabrew, I'd really like to know cause a lot of other Chargers fans
seem to feel this way as well and I just don't understand it. Is it
fear of having a worse season next year with a new coach or something?

STATEMENT OF DEAN SPANOS
President and Chief Executive Officer
San Diego Chargers
“I have decided that Marty Schottenheimer is the best person to lead the
Chargers in the 2007 season. General Manager A.J. Smith and I agree on
this fundamental point. That is why we are pleased to welcome Marty and
his coaching staff back for Marty’s sixth season as head coach of the
San Diego Chargers.
“We are all bitterly disappointed how this season ended, but we can’t
allow our disappointment to cloud the achievements of our franchise over
the past few years. Only two teams have won more regular season games
over the past three years than the Chargers. We have 24 key players
under long-term contracts through at least 2009. This is a fine young
team, with great chemistry, and right now stability is important for
this team. I’m already looking forward to next season.

He's a lame duck then. I'm not sure this is over. Sounds like Chargers are
saving face, i.e.. not fire a 14-2 head coach but force Marty's hand. Would
another team, say the Dolphins ask permission from Spanos? Marty can't be
happy and this is shaping up very much like what the Padres did with Bochy.
I can't see Marty coming back under current scenario.

Good points Don.
It made me read this more carefully and realize that it mentions a contract
offer - but *not* whether Marty has accepted it.
Stay tuned, right?

ESPN is reporting that a one year extension was offered but Marty
refused.

"I'm very comfortable with fulfilling the contract I signed several years
ago," he said at a news conference.
So perhaps it may be a done deal afterall.

I agree with Robin. after listening to Marty's news conference on NFL
Network he said he turned down a deal that included another year. he
stated that he wanted to fulfill his contract as signed and little else.
Sounds like Marty has no intention of returning for the 2008 season.
