I would be surprised if we don't find out by the end of this week.
You are right though... the longer this drags out it increases the
chances of Cowher staying.
My guess is that Dan played a big part in the talks today. That is
probably the only reason why Cowher is still taking some time to think
this over.
Or it could all be a smokescreen and the FO was just asking Cowher who
he thought should get promoted....

How did you come to that conclusion?

I got a little pissed that the guys on PTI were complaining because our FO
asked him to make a decision by yesterday. They said "he earned the right
to take as much times as he needs". Then they started questioning the
Steeler's loyalty to a guy that won them a SB.
Loyalty? They stuck with him during some putrid seasons. They gave him a
contract extention after a 6-10 season (a very lucrative one at that, which
defied logic at the time). Yet here he is, reportedly saying he would stay
if they gave him $XX next year (in affect making this about money), and THEY
are the ones being disloyal because they need to make a decision about their
franchise? Because if we don't act soon the 2 guys who would likely replace
him could both be gone as they are candidates for other teams?

Art Jr. wanted him to make a decision yesterday. Dan Rooney told
Cowher to take some time to be sure of his decision.
One thing that is clear is money is not the deciding factor here. Yes
Cowher wants to be one of the highest paid coaches. Ultimately, he
needs to figure out if 15 years is enough, if he wants to work away
from him family, and if he still wants to work for Art Jr.
I would be surprised if Cowher changes his mind and decides to stay,
but he respects Dan and will reconsider.

that's not so clear to me anymore given his agent has supposedly said that
Cowher would be tempted to stay if the Steelers gave him $XX next year
(can't remember the figure). Mort reported this and said that supposedly
the issue was that the Steelers FO wanted more than just a 1 year commitment
if they were going to pay out that kind of money.

8+ mil/yr was the rumored figure. The Steelers are supposedly offered
around 5-6 mil/yr. If money was the deciding factor then Cowher would
have resigned/retired yesterday. The Rooney's aren't likely to budge
on the offer from last offseason.
For the most part the Steelers FO has paid Cowher what he is worth.
The 1998 negotiations were a little heated when Cowher announced
that he would be interested in the GM/Coaching job at Cleveland.

Because the contract offer hasn't changed since last offseason. If it
was only about money Cowher would of retired right away.
