Everyone expected a quick start to free agency, but the limited market
of players made things even crazier than normal Friday morning.
Less than a hour after the 12:01 a.m. start to free agency, the Dolphins
reached a five-year, $25 million deal with 49ers guard Justin Smiley
that included a $9 million guarantee. The Raiders quickly made contact
with 49ers tackle Kwame Harris and may try to do something at a similar
price although talks are in the early stages.
The 49ers wasted no time hitting their free agency shopping list. They
agreed with Vikings linebacker Dontarrious Thomas on a two-year deal and
allowed Lions quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan to be re-united with new 49ers
offensive coordinator Mike Martz by agreeing to a one-year, $645,000
contract. The 49ers also locked up a two-year, $1.8 million deal with
former Panthers halfback DeShaun Foster and a one-year, $870,000 deal
with kick-returner/cornerback Allen Rossum, a former Steeler.

The New England Patriots and Randy Moss aren't close to a deal and Moss
is starting to listen to offers from other teams, according to a source.
Moss, who wasn't franchised by the Patriots, became a free agent after
midnight Thursday. Though talks continue with the Patriots, the numbers
aren't close enough for him to close his ears to other opportunities.
To facilitate a trade for the Patriots last spring, Moss took a $7
million paycut -- from $10 million to $3 million -- but shortened his
contract to one year. The Patriots had the option of franchising him but
decided to work out a contract with him.
As a free agent, Moss is available to the highest bidder. He would like
to stay in New England with Tom Brady, but he could be available for the
right offer. It is not known how many teams and which teams contacted him.

Safety Gibril Wilson was one of the upset winners at Super Bowl XLII as
a member of the underdog New York Giants, who beat the New England
Patriots. On Friday, during the first day of free agency, Wilson pulled
an even bigger upset.
Wilson agreed to a staggering six-year, $39-million deal with the
Oakland Raiders that includes $16 million in guarantees and will pay him
$19.5 million over the first three years. The deal allowed Wilson to
become the third-highest paid safety in football behind Troy Polamalu of
the Pittsburgh Steelers and Bob Sanders of the Indianapolis Colts.
The 26-year-old Wilson started 51 games over his four seasons with the
Giants. Over the past three years, he has averaged 101 tackles a season.
Wilson's contract follows the seven-year, $50.5 million deal the Raiders
used to re-sign defensive tackle Tommy Kelly on Thursday.

The Giants were given one last chance to sign safety Gibril Wilson, but
they have officially declined.
Wilson is now all-but certain to sign with the Oakland Raiders before
the night is over. In fact, according to Foxsports.com, he’s close to
accepting a whopping six-year, $39 million deal that would include a $16
million signing bonus.
That would be $6.5 million per year, for those of you scoring at home.
Wow.
Wilson’s agent, Alvin Keels, had promised to keep the Giants “in the
loop” and, according to a source, after getting an offer from the
Raiders, Keels ran it by the Giants one last time. The Giants weren’t
prepared to go anywhere near $6.5 million per season for Wilson, so they
bid him a fond farewell.
Now the Giants can turn their attention towards Sammy Knight, Eugene
Wilson, or whatever other bargain safeties they find.

PHILADELPHIA — On the same day the Eagles are signing free-agent
cornerback Asante Samuel they're also working out a deal with Raiders
defensive end Chris Clemons, according to Clemons' agent, Donal Henderson.
Henderson said Clemons will be at the team's NovaCare Complex on
Saturday morning to undergo a phsyical and complete terms of a contract.
Clemons had other visits scheduled but Henderson canceled those meetings
and said he's confident an agreement will be reached Saturday.
"It won't get done today," Henderson said this afternoon, "but I don't
see any reason why we won't get it done tomorrow."

The Super Bowl champions may be losing a key member of their secondary.
New York Giants free safety Gibril Wilson is close to accepting a
six-year, $39 million contract with Oakland, FOXSports.com has learned.
The deal would include a $16 million signing bonus.
It's believed the Giants are unwilling to match the offer.
Wilson is coming off his best NFL season with 92 tackles, seven passes
defensed and a career-high four interceptions. Wilson also had 27
tackles in four playoff games.
The Wilson signing wouldn't bode well for Raiders safety Michael Huff.
The seventh overall pick in the 2006 draft, Huff is on the trading block
after two disappointing seasons.

The Oakland Raiders are continuing their aggressive approach to free
agency and have scheduled a trip to Oakland for Bernard Berrian. This is
a move that the Raiders need to pull off as speed has been lacking in
their receiver corps, which have been thinned by the loss of Jerry
Porter. Berrian would likely be an expensive addition to the Raiders,
but hopefully they can work out a deal that would satisfy both teams.
Bernard Berrian would be a great compliment to Ronald Curry who is a
very good move the chains type receiver. Berrian can run the deep
patterns and make the safeties have to respect the deep ball, which they
never had to do in 2007. If the JaMarcus Russell to Berrian connection
can establish the deep threat, that opens things up underneath for Curry
and Zack Miller.
