Raiders rookie has a day to dazzle
Tim Kawakami
Mercury News
Article Launched: 05/11/2008 01:37:32 AM PDT

Officially, it was just blah Day 2 of the Raiders' short May rookie
mini-camp. No JaMarcus Russell, nobody on defense you know or will
ever need to. Yawn.

But from the first time he touched the ball to the last play of
practice, unofficially Saturday was Darren McFadden Day.

He took handoffs and went the distance. He practiced taking snaps as a
quarterback without obvious chaos. He practiced catching passes. He
lined up as a wide receiver in full-squad drills and spooked every
defensive back on the field.

Really, No. 20 was practically the only jersey that mattered all
afternoon.

Then, on the final play, Coach Lane Kiffin called a wide option toss
to McFadden running left. There was a linebacker waiting. But McFadden
exploded to the left corner, and around, and down the sideline, as the
offense cheered. . . .

  Letters to Brett Favre

Author: tomisfromwisconsin

Have you ever wanted to write a letter to Brett Favre but did think
he’d actually see it? This is your chance!

I am writing a book about Brett Favre, and I am collecting tribute
letters from fans to Brett regarding his retirement. If you have
written such a letter or would be willing to write one, I would love
to read it. This project is open to fans throughout the league, not
just Packer fans.

All serious replies appreciated.

Tom

McFadden getting NFL lessons in minicamp

Author: MadTruckerJD
Date: May 11, 2008 07:25

The Associated Press
Published: May 11, 2008

ALAMEDA, Calif.: Darren McFadden burst through the middle during a
drill and slowed up as he reached the secondary only to be scolded by
offensive coordinator Greg Knapp for not running hard for 40 yards.

Tom Rathman got on McFadden's case another time when he carried the
ball back to the huddle with his elbow not tucked in close to the body
to secure the ball.

The NFL education of McFadden began at the Oakland Raiders rookie
minicamp this weekend, when the fourth overall pick in the draft got
his first taste of professional football.

McFadden said Saturday he noticed the difference from college as soon
as he was handed pens, a highlighter and a notebook with his playbook.
McFadden gets to work with rookies this weekend before joining the
rest of the team later this month.

"It's good to get a few things so that you can understand and get the
concept of it," he said. "Once you get the concepts of the first part
of it, it's a lot easier to catch on to the rest of it when they throw
it at you."

Ex-Buc Spires adds to Oakland pass rush

Author: MadTruckerJD
Date: May 11, 2008 06:56

(05-10) 21:09 PDT -- The Raiders have been searching for a veteran
presence at right defensive end. Pass rusher Greg Spires was looking
for a job.

Both can check their respective wishes off the to-get list. The
Raiders agreed to terms with Spires on a one-year deal Saturday, an
NFL source confirmed.

Spires spent the past six seasons in Tampa Bay. He was a full-time
starter until last season, when he missed six games because of a calf
injury and was released in a February salary-cap move.

The Raiders have wanted to acquire a proven edge rusher since they
lost free agent Chris Clemons to Philadelphia. Spires fits the
description as a 10th-year veteran with 39.5 career sacks, including a
career-high eight in 2004.

Oakland fans might remember Spires from Super Bowl XXXVII. He started
at left defensive end and had three tackles, one sack and two pass
deflections in a 48-21 victory over the Raiders.

In a best-case scenario, the Raiders foresee him complementing left
end Derrick Burgess, as he did Simeon Rice in Tampa Bay.
