After a Life of Lies, Man Admits He Was Never an Oakland Raider

Author: The Shadow
Date: Mar 31, 2008 17:50

http://sports.aol.com/

by Michael David Smith

After years of making personal appearances and signing autographs as a
member of the "1980 AFC Champion Oakland Raiders," a Florida man named
Ed McCabe has admitted he was never an NFL player.

The strangest thing about it: McCabe appears to have lied in large part
to help him raise money for charitable organizations that aid injured
former NFL players.

"I have never been on an active NFL roster," McCabe told The Palm
Beach Post. "My time and effort has been donated to help the NFL Alumni
and these charities when no one else in the area would take the lead."

However, McCabe didn't do all his lying to help charities. He seems to
have gotten a job as a broker with a mortgage company in part because of
his alleged NFL experience; although the company has now taken down his
official biography, which extolled his NFL career, it can still be seen
here. And even McCabe's own wife apparently believed her husband had
played for the Raiders until last week.

Asked why he didn't come clean, McCabe told the Post he "should have
clarified" some things about his past.

Broncos open season against Raiders Sept. 8

FRANK SCHWAB
THE GAZETTE

The Denver Broncos will start the 2008 regular season on a national
stage on the road against a familiar foe.

The NFL announced today that Denver will play at the Oakland Raiders on
Sept. 8 as part of a "Monday Night Football" doubleheader to start the
season.

The Broncos and Raiders have met 95 times in the regular season. They
split the two meetings last year, with Denver winning at home 23-20 on
Sept. 16 in overtime and Oakland winning on its home turf 34-20 on Dec. 2.

The Broncos and Raiders will follow a game between Minnesota and Green
Bay, which starts at 5 p.m. Mountain time. The Broncos-Raiders game is
scheduled to begin at 8:15 p.m.

Mark this one day down in History. The league is NOT against the Oakland
Raiders.

I would have had this article up earlier, but I was trying to catch my
breath—it was announced today that the Raiders will host the Broncos on
the second-header of the first Monday Night Football action of the season.

This will be one of the most important games in Raiders history. Roger
Goodell is letting us decide our future here. Everywhere you look,
there's non-stop news about the Raiders. Whether it be criticism or
praise, the Raider Nation, is the talk of the nation.

Ever since we got our Silver and Black helmets dented in the Super Bowl,
the league has given us some really rugged opening games:

* 2003: @ Titans
* 2004: @ Steelers
* 2005: @ Patriots
* 2006: vs. Chargers

Raiders talking to Browns regarding Fabian

Author: RFM

Fabian Washington - DB Mar. 31 - 3:10 pm et

The Browns and Raiders have exchanged e-mails regarding CB Fabian
Washington.

No deal is imminent. After the Raiders acquired DeAngelo Hall, rumors
circulated that Washington was headed to the Browns. Oakland claims that
another team has a second-round pick on the table. We doubt that's the case
after he was arrested last month, but Cleveland couldn't match that offer
because it has no picks before the fourth round in 2008.

**********

NO PICKS BEFORE THE FOURTH ROUND?! Then fuck them. If Al REALLY has
another team with a second-rounder on the table, he better jump on it. I'd
be happy with a three, personally.

Does this then allow matching of the Carr two-year/<$2M offer sheet from the
Titans? Hmm....

But the 1-1 Raiders lost because their offense: -- Scored no
touchdowns; -- Made but one first down in the second half; -- Gained
just 219 yards -- including just 77 after halftime; -- Gained just 6
yards on its final possession, when 10 would have produced a first
down and ended Miami's chances.

BRONCOS-RAIDERS TO FINISH MNF TWO-FER
Posted by Mike Florio on March 31, 2008, 1:43 p.m.

Three of the four nationally-televised games played in Week One of the
NFL regular season will feature traditional division rivalries.

Joining Redskins-Giants on Thursday night and Vikings-Packers on
Monday night will be Broncos-Raiders, live from the Black Hole,
according to the Denver Post.

The Vikings-Packers and Broncos-Raiders games will form the
traditional (i.e., three years and counting) Week One Monday night
double-header on ESPN. It's the second time for the Vikings and the
Raiders to be involved in the two-pack of MNF games.

Edwards pickup well worth it for Oakland

Author: The Shadow

by: Anthony Carroll

With only one pick in the first three rounds of this year's NFL draft,
it appears the Oakland Raiders are content with blowing most of their
cash beforehand.

Oakland added to its long list of offseason spending on Friday, signing
former Detroit Lions defensive end Kalimba Edwards. The 28-year-old was
released by Detroit on March 13 and picked up by the Raiders 15 days
later. The deal is reportedly worth $5 million over the next two years.

A former second-round draft choice in 2002, Edwards was considered by
the majority in Detroit -- including former head coach Rod Marinelli --
to be a major disappointment. The 265-pound defender was benched the
second half of last season for inconsistent play before finally being
released this month. Marinelli called the decision to cut Edwards as one
that was in "the best interest of our entire football team."
