Team USA to consider other options if Chandler can't go

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Chris Sheridan
ESPN.com

LAS VEGAS -- So much for Plan B.

Team USA opened training camp Monday with 12 players in uniform instead of
the 13 they had planned on after a toe injury kept top alternate Tyson
Chandler from joining the team.

USA Basketball officials refused to say that Chandler was completely out of
the mix, but coach Mike Krzyzewski said a new backup plan will take shape
over the next couple of days.

"We just found out about it a couple days ago, so what we're going to do is
look at the pool of [alternates] and let a couple people know that if
something happens, you are probably going to be the guy -- but we haven't
decided yet who those guys are going to be."

The alternates for Team USA are Chandler, Shawn Marion, Mike Miller, Kevin
Durant, Chauncey Billups and Joe Johnson.

Team USA resumes quest to end its bronze age

LAS VEGAS -- When we last saw Team USA, Michael Redd was bricking free
throws in a H-O-R-S-E game shortly after LeBron James jumped into the arms
of young Knicks fans, fueling speculation that he's Big Apple-bound sometime
down the road, as Team USA's one-day media blitz brought the players to a
temporary basketball court erected atop the Rockefeller Center ice skating
rink in New York City.

Olympics reignite Kobe Bryant's passion
The Lakers guard is hungry for a gold medal after losing in the NBA Finals.
He's also sad to see Ronny Turiaf leave but optimistic that Sasha Vujacic
will re-sign with L.A.

LAS VEGAS -- The U.S. Olympic men's basketball team opened its final week of
practice on home soil Monday before heading to China with a scrimmage
against a select team consisting of such NBA rookies as O.J. Mayo and
Derrick Rose and such veterans as Andre Iguodala and LaMarcus Aldridge.

Did they even bother to keep score?

"I kept score," said Olympian Kobe Bryant, a smile back on his face and the
competitive sparkle back in his eyes.

Bleacherreport: Los Angeles Lakers Looking at Their Options This Offseason

Los Angeles Lakers Looking at Their Options This Offseason

What has happened to Ira Newble ? Where is Sasha going to end up next
? Is Ronny Turiaf really NOT coming back ? What about Ron Artest to
the Lakers ? Alex Buda explores all that and more.

by Alex Buda (Contributor) July 21, 2008

Not much is going on in Lakerland this offseason, but that doesn't
necessarily mean that they are doomed for another run at the NBA
Finals.

As expected, Trevor Ariza exercised his contract option for next
season. Ariza has proved this past season that he can run in the
triangle offense, and they need him for his great defense. He is a
good slasher-which will be key to his scoring success next season when
he plays with Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol.

With defensive players busy trying to contain those two, Ariza can
easily make a name for himself on the court.

Also, as expected, Chris Mihm exercised his contract option for next
season. It would have been foolish not to. After all, who wouldn't
like to make $2.5 million dollars for sitting on a bench ?

The Obama candidacy and the new consensus on Afghanistan
by James Cogan
TruthDig
21 July 2008

The statements made by Barack Obama during his visit to Afghanistan
over the weekend verify that his campaign for president is the
mouthpiece for a significant section of the American ruling elite that
is insisting on a shift in US policy in the Middle East and Central
Asia. Far from proposing any retreat from militarism, Obama is arguing
for a faster drawdown of troop numbers in Iraq and a reduction in
tensions with Iran, only in order to facilitate a major escalation of
US military operations in Afghanistan, potentially extending them into
Pakistan.

In a lengthy interview with CBS’s Lara Logan yesterday, Obama said the
situation in Afghanistan was “precarious and urgent”. Global terrorist
networks, he alleged, had “sanctuary” in the region and were financing
themselves with the drug trade. He declared: “I don’t think there is
any doubt that we were distracted [by the invasion of Iraq] from our
efforts to hunt down Al Qaeda and the Taliban...”
