[snip...]
The Clippers aren't done dealing. They signed Golden State forward
Kelenna Azubuike (8.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg) to a three-year, $9.3 million
offer sheet last week.
The Warriors have until Friday to match the offer, but two NBA sources
said they will not because they signed forward Maurice Evans, who
split time between the Lakers and Orlando last season, to a three-
year, $6.4 million deal.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Warriors get Marcus Williams, mostly as a shot in the dark
Posted by Tim Kawakami on July 22nd, 2008 at 12:49 pm
Sorry, been in and out today and will be out for a long time very soon (darn
my real job!), so this is going up late and short:
* NY Post reported hours ago that the Warriors acquired Nets point guard
Marcus Williams-a 2006 1st-round pick-for a protected 1st-round pick either
next year (protected through the lottery), next year (protected from
1-to-11) or two 2nd-rounders if the protected clauses are invoked both
times.
Assuming the report is accurate, and Fred Kerber is very good so I very much
assume veracity, Williams will slide into a role as a back-up to Monta Ellis
possibly with a shot to see time alongside Ellis for short stretches.
This is not good news for the C.J. Watson Nation, but oh well.
I have several fast reactions:
-I considered Williams an interesting prospect out of UConn in 2006 and was
as baffled as anybody at his freefall to the No. 22 slot that draft (one
behind Rondo, three behind Quincy Douby, 13 behind Patrick O'Bryant).

M-Will a Warrior
By Marcus
Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Just confirmed the NY Post article that the Warriors have traded a
conditional first-rounder to the Nets for Marcus Williams, the former UConn
star. Looks like the Warriors have found their PG to back-up Monta.
He's not as fast as you'd like, but he's creative with the ball, has a solid
outside shot and is a sure ball-handler. He can start if necessary and won't
be much of a drop off.
This could be a sign that the Warriors will probably match Kelenna Azubuike's
offer sheet with the Clippers. Adding Williams' $1.2 million salary for this
season doesn't hurt their chances of adding Azubuike. They still can add
another one. But the fact that they did it before the seven days were up
suggests they are trying to get their last few moves in before exhausting
most of their remaining cap space on Azubuike.

Warriors think Randolph might have some intangibles to go along with
his skill
POSTED July 22, 4:11 PM
Anthony Randolph got off to an awful start in Tuesday’s summer-league
game against the Dallas Mavericks.
Randolph started the game by taking a horrendous 20-foot contested
fadeaway jumper that didn’t hit the rim and followed that up by
fouling Reyshawn Terry after he’d been beaten badly on a drive.
It wasn’t long after, however, that Randolph put the ball down at the
top of the key and went by Terry, getting fouled and making two free
throws in the process. Randolph’s ability to drive by bigger opponents
has been the signature part of his game thus far, and the one that has
many Warrior fans excited.
But the Warriors’ coaching staff is more impressed with two other
parts of his game: His nastiness and work ethic.

Getting Marcus Williams isn't a blockbuster for Warriors but it's a
very nice move
POSTED July 22, 1:02 PM
Warriors president of basketball operations Chris Mullin pulled off
the kind of move on Tuesday that doesn’t cause much of a ripple
throughout the NBA.
He acquired point guard Marcus Williams from the New Jersey Nets for a
protected first-round pick. Big deal, right? Well, for the Warriors …
yes it is.
I guess I’ll just come right out and say it: I like this move; I like
Marcus Williams.
I like the kind of point guard Williams is and I think his style fits
in well with this team. I also think Williams’ acquisition will help
Monta Ellis, whom the Warriors are force-feeding the point guard
position.
Yesterday, the Warriors didn’t have a proven ballhandler/playmaker/
decision-maker on their roster. C.J. Watson, you say? I said “proven.”

Brook Lopez and Ryan Anderson look like role players, but who knows
about Anthony Randolph
POSTED July 22, 2:53 PM
The Warriors and Nets played on Monday but it’s still not too late to
put down a few impressions of a couple of Bay Area products playing
for the New Jersey.
It wasn’t a good afternoon for Brook Lopez or Ryan Anderson.
Lopez, the No. 10 selection out of Stanford, and Anderson, the No. 21
pick out of Cal, didn’t make much of an impact against the Warriors.
What stood out most about Lopez was his sheer size. He already has an
NBA body but it appears as if the NBA game has a lot of catching up to
do. Lopez isn’t likely to be any kind of offensive factor early in his
career and perhaps maybe ever.
He is very methodical down low with his most comfortable move the
little half-hook along the baseline. He didn’t get that to go down on
Monday, and if Lopez can’t get that shot to go down at the pro level
we’re looking at a defensive specialist, at best.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s just that fans will
expect a lot more out of the No. 10 pick.

Where We Stand
Posted by Adam Lauridsen on July 22nd, 2008 at 3:20 am
Lao Tzu once wrote "A good traveller has no fixed plans, and is not intent
on arriving." It's unclear whether the same logic applies to NBA GMs. As
the clock continues to run on the Warriors' off-season, however, it looks
like our top priorities may be the ones we accomplish last. And any plans
we may (or may not) have had likely received a bit of a jolt from the first
half of our summer league play. Here's what we've learned over the past few
days and what we're left wondering.
Anthony Randolph - Yes, all the usual summer league caveats apply, but this
young man has impact player written all over his game. From his debut
explosion to his later relentless attacking of the basket...

The word on Williams that I've seen is that he was a very highly
regarded PG prospect out of college (UConn) in 2006, projected to go
in the top 10 but fell to NJ at #22. Passing (! -- he got huge assist
numbers at UConn, among the best in the nation), ball-handling and
running the team are his strong points, but he's supposedly improved
his shooting to where that's not a big hole in his game. He's a
genuine PG with a big body -- 6'3" 205-215 lbs. His big problem seems
to be turnovers. While at UConn he got accused of stealing laptops,
and before the 2006 draft some people said he wasn't in the best
shape. But several people think he was in the totally wrong place in
NJ, and that he'll do well in Nellie's system. -AL

Barnes goes to Phoenix but multiyear deal eludes him
POSTED July 21, 5:27 PM
Here’s hoping Matt Barnes can have the kind of season this year for
the Phoenix Suns that he had two years ago for the Warriors.
If he does it will mean Barnes is back to hitting big 3-pointers,
scrounging and hustling on defense and, yes, making the occasional
bone-headed pass. And he’ll be doing it for a legitimate playoff team
and perhaps title contender.
That kind of season also would go a long way toward Barnes getting
back some of the money he gave up last summer when he ended up having
to sign a one-year deal with Golden State. This week, the Suns gave
Barnes a one-year deal for just under $1 million.
One nice year from Barnes should earn him the multiyear contract he
wants _ and foolishly passed on last offseason.
On the heels of Barnes’ terrific 2006-07 in which he played an
integral role in the Warriors’ playoff run and first-round upset of
the Mavericks, he became a free agent and was hoping to cash in.
