I thought they pulled the trigger on firing Doug a little too quickly.
First, he didn't have a lot to work with. Don Chaney, who was the
coach the year prior to Doug's arrival went 28-54. Doug in his first
year improved that to 46-36 and got into the playoffs. They lost in
the first round, but it was still an improvement. The next season he
went 54-28 and got into the playoffs winning 2 games before losing.
Still, that was more improvement. Joe Dumars and Grant Hill were on
that team as were Terry Mills and Lndsey Hunter, Rick Mahorn, Theo
Ratliff and Otis Thorpe. They had Jerome Williams as their top draft
pick and a bench that inlcuded Aaron McKie, Grant Long and Stacey
Augmon and Michael Currey.

In 1997, the team starts out 21-24 and Doug is fired and replaced by
Alvin Gentry who promptly goes 16-21 and the Pistons don't make the
playoffs.

The '97 team had many of the same players as the '96 team and they had
added Jerry Stackhouse and Bison Dele. There may have been some
dissatisfaction among the players with Doug's coaching style, but to
fire him in the middle of the season after guiding the team to major
improvement over the past two seasons was just wrong, IMO. And the
Pistons never really recovered until 2001 when Rick Carlisle was
hired.
