2/11 victory over the Bobcats

Ok, the opponent was a mediocre team missing some of their best
players, so maybe not the biggest challenge in the world. But Detroit
did what they should have done, put 'em away early, and got some good
play from the bench. That's two straight 13-point games for Stuckey;
Jarvis Hayes was 2-3 for 3-pointers, and Amir Johnson continues to
bring energy (although he picks up a lot of fouls).

The bench is definitely making progress. Which is good, because
Boston keeps rolling

Amir will learn. He's only what? Two years removed from high school?
It took Jermain O'Neil about 3 or 4 years out of high school to get
his game together. Amir shows that kind of talent and any time he
gets is all good. Smae for Stuckey and Affalo. I had a feeling Hayes
would bust out of his scoring funk sooner rather than later.

As things stand now, Detroit would be the second seed and Boston the
first. If the playoffs ended today the first round would be:

He's on track to be a John Salley type, though a little smaller, and if
they're lucky he'll get a more diverse offensive game. He and Maxiell are
fighting for a lot of the same minutes, so it will be interesting to see
how Dumars sorts it all out in the long run. Still, it's better to have
more talent than you know what to do with, and I think he'll do a better
job figuring it out than the Bullets did a while back when they ended up
keeping Webber and dumping Rasheed Wallace.

It will also be interesting to see what choices Dumars makes in the long
run with regard to the guards. I wouldn't be surprised if Hamilton gets
traded, but we'll see
-- I haven't paid close attention to what his
contract status is.

To be realistic, I think if the bench was playing 35 minutes a game the
Pistons would have a record like the Heat. They're mostly raw and there
are still a lot of holes in their games. Fortunately, they don't have to
play 35 minutes a game, and there's enough talent and versatility that
they can be used to exploit other teams' weaknesses. The bench right now
is doing what a good bench does -- they allow the team to change gears
and direction and force the other team to adjust, which they often can't
do very easily.

I don't think Saunders and Dumars were uninterested in a good bench
before, but to be honest some of the guys like Johnson and Maxiell needed
more time to develop and others like Delfino and Flip Murray had huge
holes in their games. There's a lot more to work with this year.
