Art Howe was even worse. If Valentine was going to be replaced, I say
bring back Bobby V. I think Omar Minaya can avoid recruiting inmates
who would run the prison, which was Valentine's only issue. Valentine
was great at strategy, keeping the other team on its toes, sticking
with the hot batters, etc. And he had guts.

I loved Bobby V, but one thing Willie is not lacking, is guts.
You don't bring your closer in to start the 8th and ask him to get six
outs - throwing nearly 50 pitches in the process - if you lack guts.
If you did, you would manage "textbook", by calling on Heilman or Sosa
or whomever.

He did it because he knew he cannot count on Heilman or the rest of the
bullpen, not because he has guts. He basically weighed his options and
decided to go with Wagner who IMO shouldn't have been asked to get six outs.
He is a closer good for 1 to 4 outs max, not a relief pitcher. Closers
usually are not made to go more than 1 1/3 innings at most.

I agree with everything you wrote here, and so does 90 percent of the
fan and media population...
which is why Willie made a gutsy move.
He had easier options that he wouldn't have gotten killed for.
