I'm following the game on CBS Gamecenter, and unless Beckett had the
call, I disagree with bringing in Papelbon in the ninth.

he's pitched outstanding, let him finish it

They already had him warmed up

He hasn't worked this series

Starting last year the Sox started going with the closer with a four
run lead and i agree with the philosophy.

Magnus, I think that you pegged it on the first two lines...

He was already warmed up, and he hadn't worked in this series.

This is why if you are not going to let starters finish games, the
relievers should pitch in the beginning of the game. That way they will
know when and where they are going to pitch beforehand and won't have
to get up and down 3 times warming up in case they are needed. All
relievers would be more effective if they pitched on a normal schedule.

Some day in the future you will see relievers used this way. Larussa has
been the only one with enough balls to talk about it so far. Just
remember it was my idea that I had back in the 1980's, when "pitch
count" mania took over baseball, not just for starters but relievers
too. Gone were the days of Gossage pitching 3 or 4 innings to finish a
game.

Your ideas get more stupid by the moment. Should Papelbon pitch the
first inning?

How do you know ahead of time how long your starter will go, or how
effective he will be?
