I would be the first to admit, that since the end of the second World War,
this country has not been willing to send our military into harms way, with
the goal of succeeding. But I would also argue, that there is a downside to
leaving Iraq now. The downside is that "if" we do leave, we have shown any
future adversary, how to beat the United States with all of their military
might. All they have to do is "outlast us" and they will win, and we will
lose.
"If" this country will all of its military capability, cannot pacify a
country of 25 million, what hopes do we have of ever pacificying any
country, especially a country with a much larger population? Why do we
spend so much money on having a best military machine in the world, "if" we
are not willing to do what is necessary to succeed? Why should any of us
expect that in the future, when a President sends out military into harms
way, that we have the will to succeed?

Ahem, General, can we afford such a decades-long war?

Don't worry, sir! If we leave now, we ain't showing real adversaries
in the future what we might be willing to do. See below for details.
Iraq was never America's adversary. We went in with false pretense.
We wanted its oil and strategic base value. We've been acting as a
robber, a thief. So, we haven't been welcomed.
Yet, we're stubborn, so instead of recognizing our errand way, we've
raised the level of violence and destruction against the Iraqis in
hope that they would cry uncle.

Some national interest, eh? What national interest? What did Bush,

If success is important, the answer is as long as it takes. If success is
not important, then the answer is, any day more spent there is too long....
