Republicans Vote Against Moms; No Word Yet on Puppies, Kittens
By Dana Milbank
Friday, May 9, 2008; A03
It was already shaping up to be a difficult year for congressional
Republicans. Now, on the cusp of Mother's Day, comes this: A majority of
the House GOP has voted against motherhood.
On Wednesday afternoon, the House had just voted, 412 to 0, to pass H.
Res. 1113, "Celebrating the role of mothers in the United States and
supporting the goals and ideals of Mother's Day," when Rep. Todd Tiahrt
(R-Kan.), rose in protest.
"Mr. Speaker, I move to reconsider the vote," he announced.
Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Fla.), who has two young daughters, moved to table
Tiahrt's request, setting up a revote. This time, 178 Republicans cast
their votes against mothers.

Registering potentially dangerous knives
Tue May 6, 12:29 PM ET
BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese citizens must register their identities
when they buy potentially deadly knives, Xinhua quoted the Ministry of
Public Security on Tuesday as saying.
The new regulations come as China steps up security ahead of the Beijing
Olympics.
The targeted daggers include those with blood grooves, lock-knives, and
knives with blades measuring over 22 centimeters, the ministry said in a
circular posted on its website, www.mps.gov.cn.
Police departments at all levels should check knife manufacturers for
illegal production of deadly weapons, it said.
Regulations concerning knife tools used by China's ethnic groups are to be
set by local autonomous governments, the report said.
All parcels addressed to Olympic athletes, dormitories and sporting venues
will be subject to X-ray checks, media reported on Tuesday.

Why I Will Not Vote for John McCain
Phillip Butler | March 27, 2008
As some of you might know, John McCain is a long-time acquaintance of
mine that goes way back to our time together at the U.S. Naval Academy
and as Prisoners of War in Vietnam. He is a man I respect and admire in
some ways. But there are a number of reasons why I will not vote for him
for President of the United States.
When I was a Plebe (4th classman, or freshman) at the Naval Academy in
1957-58, I was assigned to the 17th Company for my four years there. In
those days we had about 3,600 midshipmen spread among 24 companies, thus
about 150 midshipmen to a company. As fortune would have it, John, a
First Classman (senior) and his room mate lived directly across the hall
from me and my two room mates. Believe me when I say that back then I
would never in a million or more years have dreamed that the crazy guy
across the hall would someday be a Senator and candidate for President!
John was a wild man. He was funny, with a quick wit and he was
intelligent. But he was intent on breaking every USNA regulation in our
4 inch thick USNA Regulations book. And I believe he must have come...

Top Cop Says McCain Was Never Tortured
Former Vietnam vet with top secret clearance - Republican front runner
is "a lying skunk"
Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet
Thursday, February 7th, 2008
A former Vietnam veteran with top secret clearance says he has
personally spoken to numerous POW's who dispute John McCain's claim that
he refused to provide information after he was captured and tortured in
Hanoi, saying that in fact McCain's code-name was "Songbird" because of
his willingness to tell all to avoid torture.
Jack McLamb served nine years in secret operations in Cambodia and other
nations before going on to become one of the most highly decorated
police officer's in Phoenix history, winning police officer of the year
twice before taking a role as a hostage negotiator for the FBI.
"I know a lot of Vietnam veterans and a few POW's and all the POW's that
I've talked to over the years say that John McCain is a lying skunk,"
McLamb told the Alex Jones Show.

Very premature baby survival not improving
2008-05-09 (Reuters Health)
By Tim Castle
LONDON (Reuters) - There has been no improvement in the survival rate of
babies born before Britain's 24-week legal limit for abortion, doctors said
on Friday, ahead of an expected attempt by pro-life legislators to reduce
the cut-off period.
A study of 650,000 births between 1994 and 2005 in the Midlands showed clear
improvements in survival rates for infants born after 24 and 25 weeks'
gestation.
But the research, published in the British Medical Journal, found survival
rates for babies born at 22 and 23 weeks had not changed during the 12 years
covered.
David Field, professor of neonatal medicine at Leicester University and lead
author of the study, said medical advances that had aided older babies had
failed to assist the younger ones.
"Doing exactly the same thing for these more immature babies doesn't seem to
have made any difference at all," he said.

U.S. Sen. John McCain is no War Hero
Opinion Paul E. Rifenberg:
During the past 10 years, I have written a lot of articles about the
POW/MIA issue. Aside from a few complaints about the apparent lack of
legislative concern, primarily from the Senate side (Fred Upton's office
has been very responsive and proactive), I have not as yet involved
myself in any serious character assassinations.
This article will change that. For years, people have asked me who I
thought was most responsible in Washington, D.C., for undermining
genuine efforts at reconciling this issue. While I had definite ideas on
the subject, it has taken me this long to compile enough circumstantial
evidence to offer an educated opinion on the matter.
The person in Washington has done more to bury the POW/MIA issue than
any other elected official is none other than U.S. Sen. John McCain from
Arizona. Himself a former POW.

UN: Burma junta is seizing international storm aid
1.9m at risk of disease and hunger as official damns 'unprecedented'

The UN reacted furiously last night to Burma's military government
confiscating food aid intended for more than a million victims of last
week's cyclone. Two planeloads were impounded by the junta, prompting
a temporary suspension in deliveries. UN flights were resumed last
night, in the hope that negotiations would lead to a resolution.
Gordon Brown called the Burmese action "utterly unacceptable". He
stopped short of joining France and the US in calling for aid
deliveries without Burmese permission, although pressure within his
government for such a move is growing.
