Survival rates for babies born before 24 weeks are extremely low and
getting no better in spite of medical advances, according to an
authoritative study which will be published today.

The report is likely to provide fresh argument in the bitter debate
over whether the present abortion time limit should be lowered.

Israel's Olmert admits taking cash but won't quit

By Alastair Macdonald

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert admitted on
Thursday taking cash from a U.S. businessman but resisted calls to resign
over a police investigation into alleged hefty bribes over almost a decade.

As Israelis enjoyed festivities marking Independence Day and the 60th
anniversary of the founding of their state, police lifted a week-old media
gag order and announced details of accusations that sparked opposition calls
for Olmert to quit.

He said he would resign only if he were formally indicted.

Whether he goes or not, doubt over his future is likely to upset his
faltering, U.S.-sponsored peace negotiations with the Palestinians and will
cast a heavy cloud over next week's celebratory visit to Israel by U.S.
President George W. Bush.

The White House said Bush still intended to make the trip.

Olmert, in a late-night televised address to the nation, said: "I look each
and every one of you in the eye and say, 'I never took bribes. I never took
a penny for myself'."

1. Defeating the right-wing agenda of the Bush Administration.

2. Winning a wide-ranging program of reforms that put the well being
of the people before private profits.

3. Eventually replacing big business with labor and its allies as the
dominant power so as to insure that the rights, economic security and
expanding needs of the people become the overriding concern of
society.

A Really Bad, Suicidal Idea: Barack Obama-Hillary Clinton ticket

Author: lo yeeOn
Date: May 8, 2008 18:31

It's not only a cynical move, the really bad thing is that it's likely
to ensure an assassination attempt on Obama which would allow Hillary
to become president and thus fulfill the neocons' dream that their war
agenda will continue after Bush.

In the old days, JFK's assassination took place in Dallas, Texas,
where a bunch of LBJ supporters had the wherewithal to help whoever
behind them pull it off. Now, we ordinary citizens don't know where
and how something like that might be pulled off on Obama; but if there
is an opportunity, there is likely be a crime in the making.

As I've said before, this election is a titanic battle between the
neocons who need someone to carry Bush's torch to continue their
endless war and the Americans, even the wealthy, who are tired of
seeing America being dragged down by it.

And that's why Hillary is still fighting despite the gloom she has
felt since last Tuesday night. If she were a smart politician on her
own device, telling Obama today that West Virginia would be a test for
him now does not make sense since it has so few votes on the balance
and since everyone knows that W.V. is in her favor demographically
speaking, therefore Obama is not expected to win, even if he tries.

Wave of Lawsuits Over Losses Could Hit a Wall
By JONATHAN D. GLATER
Finding someone to sue over losses in the mortgage market and the
credit crisis is easy. Winning in court, lawyers say, will be hard.

Shareholders in big financial firms have accused UBS, Merrill Lynch,
MBIA and Morgan Stanley, among others, of trying to hide their home
loan problems, which later led to declines in their stock prices.

Institutional investors have sued investment firms, including UBS,
saying that they were misled into buying risky securities that later
fell sharply in value. And there are more possible defendants, like
the rating agencies that were supposed to evaluate these mortgage
securities and the accounting firms that audited these companies.

“The wave of litigation that we’ve seen, and certainly the current
momentum, is going to eclipse what we saw out of the savings and loan
crisis” of the early 1990s, said Jeff Nielsen, managing director at
Navigant Consulting. “Some of those cases are still ongoing.”

Special Counsel Shut Down Probe of Siegelman Case Last Year
By Ben Evans
The Associated Press

Wednesday 07 May 2008

Washington - The U.S. Office of Special Counsel last year shut
down a previously undisclosed investigation into the federal
prosecution of former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman, according to an
internal memo made public Wednesday.

The investigation was being conducted by a task force formed at
the agency a year ago to pursue high-profile political investigations
in Washington, most notably whether the White House played politics in
firing U.S. attorneys. It began gathering information on the Siegelman
case in September and was planning to request documents from the
Justice Department in October before Special Counsel Scott Bloch
ordered the case closed, according to the Jan. 18 draft memo, made
public by the Project on Government Oversight, a watchdog group.

Senate Ethics Committee clears Vitter in prostitution probe

An ethics complaint against Senator David Vitter (R-LA) filed by
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington has been
dismissed without prejudice today.

The complaint, submitted to the Committee on July 19, 2007, requested
that it conduct an investigation into whether Sen. Vitter violated
Senate rules by seeking the services of Pamela Martin and Associates,
the escort service run by the late Deborah Jeane Palfrey, better known
as the "DC Madam."

It was discovered that Vitter sought Palfrey's services when his phone
number surfaced on a client list obtained by Hustler publisher Larry
Flynt. On July 9, 2007, after being contacted by Hustler, Vitter
publicly acknowledged a "very serious sin in my past for which I am,
of course, completely responsible."
