A thick cloud of ash from the erupting Chaiten volcano in southern
Chile spread across a swathe of South America Wednesday, prompting
fears of health crisis for the people caught in its wake.
The enormous slow-moving plume was expected to soon reach Buenos
Aires, where about eight million people live in the Argentine capital
and its surroundings, spreading airborne ash particles which health
officials warned could be highly dangerous to inhale.
Thousands of Chileans have already fled their homes after the volcano,
located 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) south of Santiago near Chile's
border with Argentina, erupted violently Tuesday, spewing ash and lava
over its surroundings.
"Everything depends on which way the wind blows in the next few
hours," said a spokesman for Argentina's meteorological service.

GARMSER, Afghanistan The Marines of Bravo Company's 1st Platoon
sleep beside a grove of poppies. Troops in the 2nd Platoon playfully
swat at the heavy opium bulbs while walking through the fields. Afghan
laborers scraping the plant's gooey resin smile and wave.
Last week, the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit moved into southern
Helmand province, the world's largest opium poppy-growing region, and
now find themselves surrounded by green fields of the illegal plants
that produce the main ingredient of heroin.
The Taliban, whose fighters are exchanging daily fire with the Marines
in Garmser, derives up to $100 million a year from the poppy harvest
by taxing farmers and charging safe passage fees money that will buy
weapons for use against U.S., NATO and Afghan troops.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton struck a publicly defiant posture on
Wednesday about continuing her presidential bid despite waning support
from Democratic officials and donors, while some of her advisers
acknowledged privately that they remained unsure about the future of
her candidacy.
With the political world trained on Mrs. Clintons financial and
electoral viability, Senator Barack Obama moved closer to becoming the
first African-American presidential nominee of a major party. Mr.
Obama spent the day at home in Chicago, after increasing his delegate
lead in Tuesdays primaries a result that led David Plouffe, a top
Obama aide, to say on Wednesday, We can see the finish line here.

Veterans' office covering up soldier suicides: US lawmakers
by Karin Zeitvogel Tue May 6, 11:12 PM ET
WASHINGTON (AFP) - US lawmakers have accused the Department of Veterans
Affairs (VA) of being out of control and of covering up the high suicide
rate among Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans.
"The VA healthcare system has been pushed to the edge in dealing with the
mental health care needs of our veterans," Bob Filner, chairman of the House
of Representatives' Committee of Veterans' Affairs, told a packed
congressional hearing about the issue of suicides among veterans.
The hearing came five months after a first round of testimonials on the same
topic, and weeks after a series of internal VA emails about suicides among
veterans were brought to light by a documentary on US network television.
In one of the emails, sent in February, Dr Ira Katz, deputy chief patient
care services officer for mental health at the VA, wrote: "Shh! Our suicide
prevention coordinators are identifying about 1,000 suicide attempts per
month among the veterans we see."
He added: "Is this something we should address ourselves in some sort of
release before someone stumbles on it?"

$8 a gallon gasoline? Don't scoff, it may be coming sooner than you think.
By: Nicole Belle
Due of course to the outrageous oil costs, which are more than double what
it was going for this time last year.
Oil recently hit an all-time high of nearly $120 a barrel, more than
double its early 2007 price of about $50 a barrel. It closed Friday at
$118.52.
The forecasts calling for a jump to between $7 and $10 a gallon are based
on the view that the price of crude is on its way to $200 in two to three
years.
Translating this price into dollars and cents at the gas pump, one of our
forecasters, the chairman of Houston-based Dune Energy, Alan Gaines, sees
gas rising to $7-$8 a gallon. The other, a commodities tracker at Weiss
Research in Jupiter, Fla., Sean Brodrick, projects a range of $8 to $10 a
gallon.
Of course, that's what they're paying now in Europe. Fortunately for many
Europeans, the choice of easy public transportation is available as well,
unlike much of our country.

Secret McCain Campaign Slogan Memo Leaked
With McCain likely to face Obama in the general election, it appears his
staff has realized they have an uphill marketing battle ahead of them. Obama
has some of the best marketing money can buy. He has a brilliant logo,
multiple slogans, a pretty face, and he's even laid claim to the words
"change" and "hope." The following memo by a high level McCain staffer was
accidentally leaked to the press. It shows the McCain campaign's struggle to
find the perfect slogan.

Make Them Say No
Yes she can?
By Alvin S. Felzenberg
He won North Carolina by a wider margin than predicted and delivered a
speech worthy of an acceptance speech. She won Indiana by much less
than expected, and her so-called victory speech sounded like a
concession.
It did not take long for the Clinton camp, in the name of “let every
vote be counted,” to play the cards that had been showing through
their sleeve all along: Florida and Michigan. The Clintonites seem
determined to put super-delegates in a position that they have
struggled all year long to avoid. “Make them say no” may replace “yes
she can” as the next chant from her supporters.
