GOP Getting Crushed in Polls, Key Races
By Jim VandeHei and David Paul Kuhn
The Politico
Saturday 10 May 2008
John McCain is planning to run as a different kind of Republican.
But being any kind of Republican seems like some sort of death
sentence these days.
In case you've been too consumed by the Democratic race to notice,
Republicans are getting crushed in historic ways both at the polls and
in the polls.
At the polls, it has been a massacre. In recent weeks, Republicans
have lost a Louisiana House seat they had held for more than two
decades and an Illinois House seat they had held for more than three.
Internal polls show that next week they could lose a Mississippi House
seat that they have held for 13 years.

..A plan to show some alleged Iranian-supplied explosives to journalists
last week in Karbala and then destroy them was canceled after the United
States realized none of them was from Iran. A U.S. military spokesman
attributed the confusion to a misunderstanding that emerged after an Iraqi
Army general in Karbala erroneously reported the items were of Iranian
origin.

IRAN'S WEAPONS..Tina Susman of the LA Times reports that Iranian
involvement in Iraq's civil war may not be everything it's been cracked up
to be:
There was something interesting missing from Maj. Gen. Kevin Bergner's
introductory remarks to journalists at his regular news briefing in Baghdad
on Wednesday: the word "Iran," or any form of it. It was especially striking
as Bergner, the U.S. military spokesman here, announced the extraordinary
list of weapons and munitions that have been uncovered in recent weeks since
fighting erupted between Iraqi and U.S. security forces and Shiite
militiamen.
When U.S. explosives experts went to investigate, they discovered they were
not Iranian after all.

When I see republicans start to disavow the attitudes, policies, and
strategies of the rovians, the newts, the bushes, the go-cheney-yourselves,
the "I don't have to comply with your subpoenas," the bullying, piratizing,
greedy, arrogant, with-us-or-ag'in-us crap, admit their fault and their
guilt, take FULL responsibility for everything they've done, and begin to
take active and concrete steps to RECTIFY some of that damage - INCLUDING
holding the bushies fully accountable AND IMPEACHABLE, ONLY THEN will I
believe they have indeed actually "come to Jesus."
Anything else is bullshit, more of the same, piled higher and deeper. I'm in
no mood to be forgiving - OR patient - at the moment or in the future.
Too little, too late.
The pubbies spend nearly half a century locked away from control in
Washington.
Then, with the help of their moonie and talk radio pals, they had their
"revolution" and eventually ended up with control of the House, the Senate
and the Executive.
It only took them a few years to piss it away on wars of choice, gangster
capitalism, serious ethical lapses, constitutional defilement and rampant
cronyism.

As Losses Mount, GOP Begins Looking in the Mirror
By Paul Kane
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, May 11, 2008; Page A13
Since losing 30 seats and their 12-year stranglehold on power in 2006, House
Republicans have kept asking themselves the same question: Can it get any
worse? On Tuesday, they may get another answer they won't like.
With lots of help from Washington -- including more than $1.3 million in
campaign cash and a last-minute visit by Vice President Cheney --
Mississippi Republicans are desperately trying to retain a congressional
seat in one of the most reliably conservative districts in the nation.

Obama campaign mulls joint appearances with McCain
Obama's campaign says it's considering McCain campaign suggestion for
joint appearances
May 11, 2008 13:46 EST
Barack Obama's campaign is considering a suggestion from John McCain's
campaign for the two presidential hopefuls to participate in joint
town meetings and debates around the country starting this summer,
Obama's chief strategist said Sunday.
John McCain is the expected Republican presidential nominee. Obama is
closing in on the Democratic nod.
Asked about the suggestion and how seriously it was being considered,
David Axelrod, Obama's chief campaign strategist said: "Very
seriously."
"We believe that is the most significant election we've faced in a
long time," he said on "Fox News Sunday."

The fact that a leading figure in al-Sadr's ranks announced the deal and
pointedly rejected the Iraqi government's key demand to disarm suggests that
the cleric is still controlling the agenda tactically and politically
despite the most serious challenge his power the Iraqi government could
muster.

Al-Sadr Wins Another Round
By MARK KUKIS/BAGHDAD Sun May 11, 10:35 AM ET
For the first time in weeks Sadr City saw no fighting Sunday, day one of yet
another hastily brokered cease-fire between U.S.-backed Iraqi forces and the
Shi'ite Mahdi Army militia.
In announcing the deal, al-Sadr aide Sheik Salah al-Obeidi said the
agreement, "stipulates that the Mahdi Army will stop fighting in Sadr City
and will stop displaying arms in public. In return, the government will stop
random raids against al-Sadr followers and open all closed roads that lead
to Sadr City."
Al-Obeidi, who issued a statement from the southern Iraqi city of Najaf,
added: "This document does not call for disbanding al-Mahdi Army or laying
down their arms."
