I will not support Hillary Clinton for president
January 20, 2006
AUSTIN, Texas --- I'd like to make it clear to the people who run the
Democratic Party that I will not support Hillary Clinton for
president.
Enough. Enough triangulation, calculation and equivocation. Enough
clever straddling, enough not offending anyone This is not a Dick
Morris election. Sen. Clinton is apparently incapable of taking a
clear stand on the war in Iraq, and that alone is enough to disqualify
her. Her failure to speak out on Terri Schiavo, not to mention that
gross pandering on flag-burning, are just contemptible little dodges.
The recent death of Gene McCarthy reminded me of a lesson I spent a
long, long time unlearning, so now I have to re-learn it. It's about
political courage and heroes, and when a country is desperate for
leadership. There are times when regular politics will not do, and
this is one of those times. There are times a country is so tired of
bull that only the truth can provide relief.

The severely wounded McCain was finally thrown on the back of a truck and
hauled to the infamous Hanoi Hilton prison camp. Immediately, his captors
began to interrogate him using sadistic methods they had perfected on
hundreds of captured U.S. servicemen before him.
His interrogators demanded military information. When he refused, his
guards kicked and pounded him mercilessly.
McCain admits that three to four days after he was captured, he promised
the Vietnamese, "I'll give you military information if you will take me
to the hospital."
McCain also admits that the Vietnamese rushed him to a hospital, but
denies he was given "special medical treatment" because of his promise.
He claims he was given medical care normally unavailable to captured
Americans only because the Vietnamese learned he was the son of Admiral
John S. McCain, Jr., the soon-to-be commander of all U.S. forces in the
Pacific including those fighting in Vietnam.

Painting Stories: In Memoriam Moe
The virtual ink hasn't yet dried on the FOMC's one-two punch of rate
cuts (125 bp in 8 days) and the "market" is back calling for more.
According to the Fed funds options market, the probability of a cut in
March is 90%%, with the chance of a 75 bp cut rising to 30%% - equal to
that for a 25 or 50 bp cut (see chart below).
Chart: Cleveland Fed
In contrast to Greenspan's previous gradualism (he rarely moved by
more than 25 bp), the Fed's current actions reflect Mr. Bernanke's
choice for an aggressive monetary style, shaped by Milton Friedman's
theories and his own academic work. Both interpret the Great
Depression as the result of hesitant monetary policies in the face of
financial market turmoil, instead of unsupportable asset bubbles and
severe socio-economic imbalances in income and wealth.

McCain widens lead, Clinton lends cash
McCain Nearing Unbeatable Lead for GOP Nomination; Clinton Lent Her
Campaign $5 Million
DAVID ESPO
AP News
Feb 06, 2008 21:02 EST
Sen. John McCain padded his commanding delegate lead in the Republican
presidential race Wednesday and urged conservative critics to cut him
some slack. In a Democratic surprise, Hillary Rodham Clinton disclosed
she'd lent $5 million to her cash-short campaign.
"And I think the results last night proved the wisdom of my
investment," said the former first lady, one day after trading
victories with Barack Obama in a Super Tuesday string of contests from
coast to coast.
The competition for Republican delegates was a runaway.
Nearly complete returns from Super Tuesday left McCain with 707
delegates, nearly 60 percent of the 1,191 needed to win the nomination
at the national convention in St. Paul, Minn., this summer.

Democratic dead-heat 'not good news' says Dean
AFP
Published: Wednesday February 6, 2008
[Zeppnote: one of the rare times I disagree with Dean. The fact that
we have a competitive and unmanaged race is one of the reasons for the
high level of voter interest. Political operatives have forgotten
that drama can play a big role in a campaign]
Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean on Wednesday voiced
concern over the prospect of a brokered convention at the end of the
party's White House nominating contests.
"The idea that we can afford to have a big fight at the convention and
then win the race in the next eight weeks, I think, is not a good
scenario," Dean said according to excerpts of an interview with NY1
television.
In state nominating contests so far, no clear winner has emerged among
Democrats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama for the party's nomination
ahead of November's presidential vote to replace George W. Bush in the
White House.

'The evidence therefore suggests that we are looking at a coordinated
program of undersea cable sabotage by an actor, or actors, on the
international stage with an anti-Muslim bias.'
Connecting the Many Undersea Cut Cable Dots - 9 Or More?
By Richard Sauder, PhD 05 Feb 2008
The last week has seen a spate of unexplained, cut, undersea communications
cables that has severely disrupted communications in many countries in the
Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. As I shall show, the total numbers
of cut cables remain in question, but likely number as many as eight, and
maybe nine or more...
one off of Marseille, France
two off of Alexandria, Egypt
one off of Dubai, in the Persian Gulf
one off of Bandar Abbas, Iran in the Persian Gulf
one between Qatar and the UAE, in the Persian Gulf
one in the Suez, Egypt
one near Penang, Malaysia
initially unreported cable cut on 23 January 2008 (Persian Gulf?)

there was no government intervention here, the groups of sellers,
buyers and lenders were all rational people operating in a free
market, so what happened, and why does it always happen in the above
scenario?

Won't Lend, Won't Borrow, No Time For Sorrow
The Era of Debt is coming to an end (for now, anyway...).
The Fed's latest Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey (January 2008, pdf
document) vividly demonstrates that a one-two punch is being delivered
to credit expansion: lenders are furiously tightening lending
standards and borrowers don't want to borrow. The following charts are
from the above survey and tell the story succintly.
First, residential mortgage lending:
Net Percentage of Respondents Tightening Standards
For Residential Mortgage Loans
Net Percentage of Respondents Reporting Stronger Demand
For Residential Mortgage Loans

Storms Across 5 States Leave at Least 52 Dead
By SHAILA DEWAN and BRENDA GOODMAN
Published: February 7, 2008
ATKINS, Ark. Ā Residents in five Southeastern states rose Wednesday to
widespread clusters of destruction caused by an unusually ferocious
winter tornado system. At least 52 people were killed and scores more
were injured.
Many had spent a harrowing Tuesday night punctuated by breaking glass
and warning sirens as the tornadoes tossed trailer homes into the air,
collapsed the roof of a Sears store in Memphis, whittled away half a
Caterpillar plant near Oxford, Miss., and shredded dorms at Union
University in Jackson, Tenn., leaving crews to rescue nine students
trapped in the rubble.
