Every few years, the economic textbooks are updated. A few more years
of data are added to graphs celebrating economic growth. Stories of
"economics in the news" are revamped to make them relevant to new
recruits. Theoretical dead ends, paraded five editions ago as the
leading edge of the discipline, are quietly dropped. A new cover is
slapped on, and students are required to fork out even more money for
the new edition, despite the contents being 95 percent recycled.

Old professors retired to new pursuits are replaced by new professors
pursuing old ideas. The new recruits were carefully screened for their
orthodoxy. They studied at leading departments, where they
demonstrated...

Roy Scheider, a stage actor with a background in the classics who
became one of the leading figures in the American film renaissance of
the 1970s, died on Sunday afternoon in Little Rock, Ark. He was 75 and
lived in Sag Harbor, N.Y.

Because better a Christian pedophile than an atheist non-pedophile.

BANGOR, Maine — The head of Maine’s Roman Catholics announced Friday
that he has reversed his decision to reinstate a former Bangor priest
to the ministry in response to a public outcry.

Bishop Richard J. Malone said that in allowing the Rev. Paul Coughlin,
73, to serve as a fill-in priest he had "misjudged the possibility of
an effective ministry for Father Coughlin."

Malone said Thursday that Coughlin, who is retired, could act as a
fill-in priest at parishes around the states except in Bangor, South
Portland and Wells where he was associated with a sex offender.

Back in the late 1970's, Supreme Court Justice David Prosser decided
he didn't want to go after Fr. John Patrick Feeney because it would
cause harm to Todd and Troy Merryfield, a pair of boys whom Feeney
abused.

They were 12 and 14 years old and living in Freedom, WI at the time.

After Feeney left the state documents from the group SNAP say he
abused other boys and later received sexual favors with jail inmates.

LEBANON, Va. – Matthew Smith, a former co-preacher at a Russell County
church, will spend 10 years in a state prison after entering a guilty
plea in November to having a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old
girl.

Russell County CommonwealthÂ’s Attorney Mike Bush said Friday the
31-year-old Smith received a 35-year sentence for having carnal
knowledge, taking indecent liberties with a child and sodomy. Twenty
years of the sentence were suspended, Bush said.

WASHINGTON - Hillary Rodham Clinton retains her lead among suddenly critical
Democratic Party insiders even as Barack Obama builds up his delegate margin
with primary and caucus victories across the country, according to a survey
by The Associated Press.

Of the 796 lawmakers, governors and party officials who are Democratic
superdelegates, Clinton had 243 and Obama had 156. That edge was responsible
for Clinton's overall advantage in the pursuit of delegates to secure the
party's nomination for president. According to the AP's latest tally,
Clinton has 1,135 total delegates and Obama has 1,106, with three delegates
still to be awarded from Sunday's Democratic caucuses in Maine. A candidate
must get 2,025 delegates to capture the nomination.

The numbers illustrate not only the remarkable proximity between the two
candidates, but also the extraordinary influence superdelegates could wield
in determining who becomes the nominee. Both campaigns are aggressively
pursuing superdelegates, trumpeting their endorsements the moment they are
secured.

Conservative Pundits Bring "Chaos Out Of Order" To Republican Base
An interesting article in the February 18, 2008 issue of Newsweek addresses
the discord between Senator John McCain and what the article describes as
"many leaders of the conservative movement." While I think the article
accurately and insightfully explores the overall tensions within the
Republican base, it steps back from confronting the disconnect between the
firebrand pundits such as Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh et al. and the rank
and file Republican voters.

Space Oddity

Securities margin debt (chart below, click to enlarge) is the booster
fuel that always kicks in late in a bull phase. Market astronauts
borrow freely, certain they will send their portfolios to the Moon.
Such "lunatic" phenomena commonly foreshadow the exhaustion of upward
momentum and a return to terra firma. Depending on the exuberance
previously exhibited, the terra can be very firma, indeed, for those
unwise enough to still occupy their spent rockets as they hurtle back
to Earth.

Updated chart: Some readers asked to see the chart in log scale. I
think most non-technical people do not quite "feel" a log chart, so I
did the next best thing: I added an exponential trend line for
comparison purposes (red curve).
