The two top Democratic leaders of the new Congress blasted President Bush on
his decision to send more troops to Iraq and warned him not to take military
action against Iran without their approval, but they offered their
bipartisan cooperation on domestic issues.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco and Senate Majority Leader Harry
Reid of Nevada also indicated Friday in their annual "pre-buttal" to Bush's
State of the Union speech that they want Congress to take strong action on
global warming, an issue that until recently the Bush administration has
downplayed.

The Democratic leaders' comments on Iraq, however, left little doubt that
the debate over the war will overshadow everything else this year on Capitol
Hill.

That impression was reinforced by a sharp exchange of words between the
White House and Pelosi.

Pelosi, appearing on ABC's "Good Morning America," reiterated her tough
stand against Bush's handling of the war.

The president "has to answer for his war. He has dug a hole so deep he can't
even see the light on this. It's a tragedy. It's a stark blunder," the
speaker said.

ARMY medics in Iraq battling to save a fatally-wounded young soldier begged
him to "stay with us" as his life ebbed away.

Kingsman Alex Green, 21, who has a two-year-old son, was hit by small-arms
fire as he returned to barracks after escorting a convoy out of Basra on
Saturday morning.

Now an eyewitness account has revealed details of the desperate battle to
stem the bleeding from his fatal shoulder wound as shocked colleagues looked
on.

It emerged Kingsman Green, from Warrington, was conscious and lucid enough
to answer questions about morphine when he arrived back at his Basra palace
base, seven miles from the scene of the shooting.

Transferred

The dad-of-one was bound up within minutes and transferred by helicopter to
a field hospital five miles outside the city. But despite surgeons operating
for 90 minutes, he could not be saved.

His grieving family later issued a statement saying Kingsman Green had been
"living his dream" in the Army.
