The Conference organisers have asked me for a brief history of neo-
liberalism which they title "Twenty Years of Elite Economics". I'm
sorry to tell you that in order to make any sense, I have to start
even further back, some 50 years ago, just after the end of World War
II.

In 1945 or 1950, if you had seriously proposed any of the ideas and
policies in today's standard neo-liberal toolkit, you would have been
laughed off the stage at or sent off to the insane asylum. At least...

Andrew R. Winters was a proud dad.

So proud, neighbors and friends said, that he had recently begun wearing a
maroon Marine Corps T-shirt in support of his son David, 18, who just
completed boot camp.

That makes the account that Montgomery County police provided yesterday all
the more baffling.

Winters, 55, an architect, was found dead in a wooded area near his North
Potomac home with several stab wounds on his torso, neck and face, police
said. David, who was home for the holidays from Camp Lejeune, N.C., was
arrested and charged with first-degree murder after detectives determined
that there were too many holes in his story and that there was too much
blood on his clothes.

Paris loses out: Hilton fortune pledged to charity

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. hotel heiress Paris Hilton's potential
inheritance dramatically diminished after her grandfather Barron
Hilton announced plans on Wednesday to donate 97 percent of his $2.3
billion (1.16 billion pounds) fortune to charity.

That wealth includes $1.2 billion Barron Hilton stands to earn from
both the recent sale of Hilton Hotels Corp. -- started by his father
Conrad in 1919 when he bought a small hotel in Cisco, Texas -- and
pending sale of the world's biggest casino company, Harrah's
Entertainment Inc.

That money will be placed in a charitable trust that will eventually
benefit the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, raising its total value to
about $4.5 billion, the foundation said in a statement.

LAKELAND - Public floggings hurt, even when administered by satirical
sacred noodles.

Ask the Polk County School Board. The panel made news last month when
five of its seven members declared a personal belief in the concept of
intelligent design, the religiously based explanation of the
development of life believed in by many Christians.

Four of those five sympathetic board members said they would like to
see intelligent design taught in Polk schools as an alternative to
Darwinian evolution, at a time when new state standards mentioning
evolution by name for the first time are under consideration.

Just like that, it appeared the Darwin wars had found their newest
battlefield.

Yet a few weeks later, the controversy is dying with a whimper.
There's no board support for a challenge to the proposed standards.
Some of the five school board members blame the local newspaper for
trying to start a fight.

Japan Mines `Flammable Ice,' Flirts With Environmental Disaster

Dec. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Fifty-five million years ago the world's
climate was catastrophically changed when volcanoes melted natural gas
frozen in the seabed. Now Japan plans to drill for the same icy
crystals to end its reliance on imported energy.

Billions of tons of methane hydrate, frozen chunks of chemical-laced
water buried in sediment some 3,000 feet under the Pacific Ocean
floor, may help Japan win energy independence from the Middle East and
Indonesia. Japanese engineers have found enough ``flammable ice'' to
meet its gas use demands for 14 years. The trick is extracting it
without damaging the environment.

Japan is joining the U.S. and Canada in test drilling for methane even
as scientists express concerns about any uncontrolled release of the
frozen chemical. Some researchers blame the greenhouse gas for
triggering a global firestorm that helped wipe out the dinosaurs.

Fire units respond to Palo Verde nuclear power plant

The Phoenix Fire Department along with several units responded to the Palo
Verde Nuclear Generating Station west of Phoenix.

Authorities say a maintenance crew noticed smoke coming from a piece of
fiberglass in a cooling tower at Unit 3.

Arizona Public Service, which operates the station, says there is no fire at
the station, and nobody was hurt.
