Saddam tried to kill Bush's daddy. Bush finally achieved his dream of
personal revenge: he killed Saddam.
Do you feel a sense of fulfillment, Dubya? What a petty person you are,
Dubya.

It would be nice if someone would explain how it was that the 8000
page Patriot Act was already written, printed, and ready to be sent to
Congress immediately after 9-11 when, before the event, there would
have been no chance of its passage. Another coincidence?
Spence: $2M settlement underscores loss of freedom
Jackson attorney battles FBI, big government, Patriot Act.
By Angus M. Thuermer Jr.
December 6, 2006
Fresh from winning a $2 million settlement in a suit against the FBI
for wrongly tying an Oregon lawyer to the Madrid bombing case, Jackson
Hole attorney Gerry Spence warned Tuesday of growing fascism in
America.
Spence was the lead attorney in a case brought by Oregon lawyer Brandon
Mayfield against the FBI for his arrest in the case that saw 191 people
killed in Spain. The FBI began investigating Mayfield after computers
said his fingerprints came close to matching a print found on a bag
containing explosive detonators connected to the March 11, 2004,
bombing.

Edwards Touts Investments in Health Care

By LARRY MARGASAK
Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic presidential contender John Edwards says
it is more important to invest in universal health care and lifting
people out of poverty than to reduce the budget deficit.
The 2004 vice presidential nominee said in an interview broadcast
Sunday said ``there is a tension'' between the two directions, but he
has made his choice.
``If I were choosing now between which is more important, I think the
investments are more important,'' he said on ABC's ``This Week.''
Edwards' proposal, which includes tax cuts and a million housing
vouchers for the poor, may place him at odds with Democrats in charge
of the congressional spending committees.

Patients die as Sicilian mafia buys into the hospital service
Tom Kington in Rome
Monday January 1, 2007
The Guardian
A wave of deaths in Sicilian hospitals has highlighted a crisis in the
island's health service, linked by a senior politician to the draining
of public funds by the mafia.
Three suspicious deaths of patients in three days over Christmas have
raised alarm. A 78-year-old woman died of a heart attack in a Palermo
emergency ward on December 28 after waiting four hours to be seen. The
ward has no triage, or system for prioritising patients.
Earlier, a pregnant woman delivered a stillborn child after doctors
declined to carry out a caesarean section, while the parents of a
newborn son who died in hospital have accused doctors of malpractice.
"Cosa Nostra is investing heavily in private health centres in Sicily
which are subsidised by the state," said Francesco Forgione, the head
of Italy's parliamentary anti-mafia commission.

Dismay among Kurds that genocide case unanswered
Michael Howard
Monday January 1, 2007
The Guardian
Iraq's Kurds expressed satisfaction yesterday at the death of Saddam
Hussein, but their joy was tempered with disappointment that their
greatest tormentor would never face justice for what he had done to
them.
Saddam had been standing trial in a second case on charges of genocide
against the Kurds during the Anfal campaign in the late 1980s, during
which more than 4,000 villages were destroyed and more than 100,000
people killed in a series of military sweeps in the Kurdistan region
that included the regular use of chemical weapons.

Camera footage of the final minutes of Saddam Hussein released
yesterday shows him being taunted by Shia hangmen and witnesses, a
scene that risks increasing sectarian tension in Iraq.

Mexico offers satnav to illegals crossing into the US
Justin Stares
Monday, January 01, 2007
Would-be illegal immigrants planning to cross the desert and enter the
United States on foot are to be given hand-held satellite devices by
the Mexican authorities to ensure they arrive safely.
Those who get lost or fall sick during the dangerous four-day crossing
will be able to activate the device, to alert frontier police on both
sides of the border.
The satellite tracking service will require would-be illegals to
register their intentions before setting off - a paradoxical move,
given that secrecy is necessary for success - but Mexican authorities
are predicting that about 200,000 devices will be handed out when the
project is launched formally in the coming year.
