Auto industry's future at issue as House Speaker Pelosi and Mich.'s Dingell
clash over who leads energy, climate reform

If you don't think all politics are local, ask Rep. John Dingell.
The Dearborn Democrat, dean of the House, is battling an assault by Speaker
Nancy Pelosi on his power, the Energy and Commerce Committee he again heads
and the industry he's spent 50 years in Congress defending. This from the
speaker he swore in with great fanfare little more than two weeks ago.

Harry Truman had it right: If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.

Convinced legislation to ostensibly curb global warming and America's
addiction to oil are key to Democrats retaining power in 2008, Pelosi
Thursday announced creation of a Select Committee on Energy Independence and
Global Warming -- two issues, clearly in Dingell's bailiwick, that could
have profound effects on any automaker selling cars and trucks in the United
States.

UAW gearing up for contract talks

UAW gearing up for contract talks
http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070119/BUSINESS01/701190439/10...

The UAW, preparing for challenging labor negotiations with U.S. automakers,
will have its General Motors Corp. sub-council meeting next week to prepare
for contract talks this fall.

UAW local presidents representing GM or Delphi Corp. employees are expected
to attend. Some will come from the deep South, such as Terry Scruggs,
president of UAW Local 2195 in Tanner, Ala.; others from closer to home,
like Mike Hanley, president of UAW 699 in Saginaw.

This meeting, like most sub-council meetings, will serve as an opportunity
for local presidents and the UAW's national leaders to exchange information
about the status of their union and plans. Hanley said a separate UAW
meeting in March will focus more on bargaining details.

The UAW -- with membership estimated at fewer than 500,000 after a high of
1.5 million in the 1970s -- will negotiate with GM, Ford Motor Co. and
DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group this year over highly contentious
topics, such as health care concessions and eliminating the jobs bank, a
mechanism for paying excess workers most of their wages.

  Cheaper gas cause for worry

Cheaper gas cause for worry
http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070118/COL06/701180401/1014/BU...

Excuse me for not doing cartwheels over gasoline prices dropping to $1.87 a
gallon.

This is bad news for a nation of immediate-gratification consumers and
attention-span-challenged policy leaders. It means we can expect renewed
American demand for big, thirsty vehicles that have no appeal anywhere else
in the world, and waning interest in bold steps to reduce our nation's
dependence on imported oil.

I worry about this despite the fact that cheap gasoline, on a personal
level, has a decidedly positive immediate impact on the Walsh family budget.
I drive a 25-m.p.g. sedan 25,000-30,000 miles a year, so a drop from $3 to
$2 a gallon leaves an extra $1,000 a year in my pocket.

So why worry?

Worry because whenever the Iraq war ends, it looks likely to end badly.

Worry because Iran, Venezuela and other oil-exporting countries are led by
tyrants who openly spew hatred of the United States.

Can $2 gas give SUV sales a jump?

Author: Jim Higgins

Only if the buyer really wants a jump on their way to bankruptcy. Resale
value, when gas goes back up, will be zip and be extremely costly to
fill-up. Buy an SUV and lose.

Can $2 gas give SUV sales a jump?
http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070117/BUSINESS01/701170344/10...

No one thinks it will last, but $2-per-gallon gasoline could provide a boost
to domestic automakers early this year as consumers eye big SUVs again, at
least a little.

The Detroit automakers suffered a financial blow when gas hit $3 a gallon
last summer and auto buyers avoided big, fuel-thirsty pickups and SUVs that
are most profitable for the companies.

But now gas prices in the Detroit area are at their lowest point since March
2005, and crude oil dipped below $52 a barrel -- a 19-month low -- Tuesday
when Saudi Arabia refused to back an emergency OPEC meeting meant to boost
oil prices.

In Detroit, at the North American International Auto Show, the lower price
of gas was on some would-be buyers' minds. Take Alvin Brezzell, who was
eyeing a Jeep Grand Cherokee on Tuesday.

Michigan, Big Three both need fresh start
http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070117/AUTO02/701170340/1148...

J ust when you wonder if things are truly hopeless in Michigan:
General Motors Corp. dominates the Detroit auto show. It sweeps car and
truck of the year with the Saturn Aura and Chevy Silverado. Two bellwether
production cars, the Chevy Malibu and Cadillac CTS, look like potential
hits. And the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid threatens to change the debate about
GM and environmentally friendly technology.

Then Ford Motor CEO Alan Mulally enunciates what many already know: The Blue
Oval is woefully behind the competition (especially GM) in efforts to
leverage its global reach to cut costs, get competitive and build better
vehicles. If acknowledging problems is the first step toward fixing them,
there is a road out for the Glass House, however rough it may be.

Then word leaks out that United Auto Workers leaders are preparing members
for sacrifices in this year's national contract talks. That's a rational and
statesmanlike acknowledgement the Detroit business model is dead; it's also
the best way for the union and its employers to build a new one.

Suppliers seek more clout
http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070117/AUTO01/701170378/1148

In a move designed to win more political clout for auto parts suppliers, a
major trade group representing parts makers will release a study today that
found the industry employs more Americans than any other manufacturing
sector, accounting for 4.5 million jobs.

The study, conducted for the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association by
the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, found that motor vehicle
parts suppliers directly employ 783,100 U.S. workers and that each of those
jobs bolsters the economy by creating an additional 4.7 jobs.

The 103-year-old association says it hopes to use the findings to lobby
lawmakers on the sector's behalf and tackle issues on Capitol Hill such as
high health care and raw materials costs that are burdening the auto
industry.

"We usually get thrown into the numbers with the car companies," said MEMA
CEO and President Robert McKenna. "They talk about their direct employees
plus who their parts suppliers are. Well, our organization represents the
parts suppliers, and we felt we needed to have our voice recognized and have
a seat at the table, particularly in Washington."

You're very welcome! But why not go to the UPJ web site, get some
information, and post more yourself? Too often progressive people end
up talking only to other progressives and let the rightwing go
unopposed in the public arena.

Oreck move Smart! NO STATE INCOME TAX!

Author: wise purchaser
Date: Jan 15, 2007 16:14

Oreck move is SMART as the state of Tennessee does NOT have a state
income tax! I moved my business 7 years ago from the state of Georgia
( the we're fucking me to the tune of Tens of thousands of dollars EACH
YEAR in state income tax) to the State of Tennessee and have SAVED
plenty of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ in doing so!

We do not have many PARACITES and USELESS eaters /breeders in this
state! the state cannot reach into OUR paychecks and take from
PRODUCERS and give it to WORTHLESS eaters and no good BREEDERS!

The USELESS eaters and BREEDERS live in states that collect a state
income tax! and the states that collect state income taxes are BROKE
and want MORE$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Look at how STUPID it is to pay a STATE INCOME TAX:
you pay about:

30%% federal income tax
15 %% commie social security tax ( 7.5 from you and 7.5 from your
employer)
6%% state income tax (avarage %%)
10 %% 'Church tax' ( FOOLS [suckers] that give a church tithes)
