Linguist gives students lesson in free thinking
Dundee-Crown talks politics with MIT professor
By Emily Krone
Daily Herald Staff
5/17/2008 12:16 AM
In a second-floor classroom at a Carpentersville high school, one of
America's most renowned free-thinkers warned about 40 assembled students
that the American public school system conspires to blunt their
creativity and engender their obedience.
Via speakerphone from his office at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, linguistics professor Noam Chomsky told Dundee-Crown High
School students that a two-tiered educational system exists: While the
elite attend schools that promote critical, independent thought, the
masses attend schools that train students to pass tests and follow orders.

RNC protesters agree to a diversity of tactics
Leave a comment Tell a friend
By Julia Opoti
TC Daily Planet
May 16, 2008
“Come join a discussion of past experiences, concerns and plans for how
to make the RNC demonstrations powerful,” read an email in my inbox. My
interest was immediately piqued.
The RNC Welcoming Committee, whose goal is to “Crash the Convention,”
hosted the gathering. The RNC-WC describes itself as an “anarchist and
anti-authoritarian organizing body” created to protest the Republican
National Convention (RNC), which will be held in St. Paul in September.

I attended the first ever Social Forum in Kiev, Ukraine. Called by a
coalition of Ukrainian independent trade unions and left wing groups for
1 and 2 May 2008 it included speakers from trade unions, and the
anti-fascist movement, and special guest Dashty Jamal, an Iraqi trade
unionist and refugee rights campaigner.
The Forum started with a demonstration and march from Kriesthatyk to
counter the state Stalinist-influenced May Day trade union march. 100
independent campaigners from Ukrainian anarchist and social movement
organisations most notably antifa, a leading anti-fascist group. Dashty
Jamal addressed the demonstators, speaking of the importance of making

Daily Foreword May 16, 2008: After enduring an American holocaust, the
tearing apart of my family and the harassment of family members by federal
agents targeting me, an honest former federal bank examiner, I see all
attacks against the regime and their wealthy controllers to be justifiable
homicide, but you must always ask, "Am I truly getting to the source of my
sorrow, pain, suffering, and indebted servitude to a wealthy group of
sadistic and inhumane war criminals or animals of some sort?"
I see the USA as a cruel and inhumane dictatorship and the lines are drawn
between those with rights and those who are treated like pigs in a sadistic
farmers pig pen. I welcome strikes against them...

The survivors' stories leave no doubt: Guantánamo makes us all less safe
Official accounts reveal with chilling clarity that acts carried out in
the name of the war on terror have backfired dreadfully
by George Monbiot
The Guardian
Tuesday May 13 2008.
When we learned last week that Abdallah Salih al-Ajmi had blown himself
up in Mosul in northern Iraq, the US government presented this as a
vindication of its policies. Al-Ajmi was a former inmate of the
detention camp at Guantánamo Bay. The Pentagon says his attack on Iraqi
soldiers shows both that it was right to have detained him and that it
is dangerous ever to release the camp's prisoners. On the contrary, it
shows how dangerous it was to put them there in the first place.
Al-Ajmi, according to the Pentagon, was one of at least 30 former
Guantánamo detainees who have "taken part in anti-coalition militant
activities after leaving US detention". Given that the majority...

Ostracism and boycott are such closely related social tactics that one
is often considered a form of the other.
on Sunday 11 May 2008
by Wendy McElroy
The current disillusionment with politicians -- which may be Clinton's
true legacy -- will be positive only if it becomes disillusionment with
the political means itself. Otherwise, people will continue to look
primarily to the 'State' for solutions instead of to 'Society.'
State v. Society

(en) US, Howard Zinn is an Anarchist [who some time do vote] – An
Interview by ZIGA VODOVNIK with Howard Zinn on Anarchism
Date Tue, 13 May 2008 11:30:23 +0300
Howard Zinn, 85, is a Professor Emeritus of political science at Boston
University. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1922 to a poor immigrant
family. He realized early in his youth that the promise of the “American
Dream“, that will come true to all hard-working and diligent people, is
just that -- a promise and a dream. During World War II he joined US Air
Force and served as a bombardier in the European Theatre. This proved to
be a formative experience that only strengthened his convictions that
there is no such thing as a just war. It also revealed, once again, the
real face of the socio-economic order, where the suffering and sacrifice
of the ordinary people is always used only to higher the profits of the
privileged few.

Military analysts named in Times exposé appeared or were quoted more
than 4,500 times on broadcast nets, cables, NPR
Summary: A New York Times article detailed the connection between
numerous media military analysts and the Pentagon and defense
industries, reporting that "the Bush administration has used its control
over access and information in an effort to transform" media military
analysts "into a kind of media Trojan horse -- an instrument intended to
shape terrorism coverage from inside the major TV and radio networks." A
Media Matters review found that since January 1, 2002, the analysts
named in the Times article -- many identified as having ties to the
defense industry -- collectively appeared or were quoted as experts more
than 4,500 times on ABC, ABC News Now, CBS, CBS Radio Network, NBC, CNN,
CNN Headline News, Fox News, MSNBC, CNBC, and NPR.
