I presume this means I go silent on the 24th. The epidemic continues:
As a Verizon Newsgroup service user, we wanted to let you know about some
important changes that we will soon be making to our Newsgroup service.
On June 24, 2008, we will be modifying our Newsgroup offerings to only offer
groups in the Big-8 Newsgroup hierarchies, which are listed below. The
0.verizon.* newsgroup hierarchy will also continue to be available. Users
will not be able to post or download from any other newsgroups using our
Newsgroup service.

Why wouldn't you use another News server that provides the Usenet groups
you subscribe to?
AIOE is free. http://aioe.org/
Octanews is a well-run commercial server. Note that if you buy a tiny
block of access, you'd have access to text Usenet for a very long time.
http://www.octanews.com/
Or, you can let Verizon know that having a well-run News server is
important to you by switching to another ISP.
This part of the press release continues to crack me up:
>IMPORTANT: If you continue to subscribe to unsupported newsgroups, you may
>experience poor computer performance and slow throughput speeds. Failure to
>unsubscribe may also interfere with the functioning of the Verizon network
>or use of the network by other Verizon users, which is a violation of our
>Acceptable Use Policy.
So, if you continue to subscribe to a newsgroup that's been removed, you
can break Usenet. Who knew?

http://motzarella.org/ is another one I've been alerted to. saving all
the recommendations for when I *have to*

So, Long, did you take my suggestion about subscribing to one of the
free Usenet servers?
What about the rest of the Time Warner Cable and Verizon subscribers?
What News servers did you guys find?
Are any of you going to express your displeasure about getting screwed
like this and unsubscribe from your ISPs to find another that includes
Usenet?

guess I'll find out tomorrow if I can get in or not (the date mentioned
as cutoff day; altho' I've not been notified yet by my local TWC of such
action). when I can't get in, I'll try another reader ...
