What are the common stamp denominations that most PO's keep at the counter?
I just mailed some "large envelopes" and had to use 3 stamps to make up the
correct postage. Seems like they would keep 80-cent stamps as that is the
amount for a 1 oz large envelope, but they don't.\

See usps.com for the stamps currently sold at retail windows. All post
offices (especially those of size) are supposed to have them available. Any
previously issued stamp is still valid. They probably had 80 cent stamps
but are trying to eliminate excess stock that will be difficult to use down
the road. As an example, the 63 cent stamp used to be "the stamp" for a two
ounce letter. The current rate makes it an infrequently needed stamp.
Clerks will often use such stamps on parcels to remove them from inventory.

What kind of "business" is this! Ever since they went into the business of
selling collectibles, Daffy Duck goods and other crap, they lost sight of
what the post office (former name of postal service) was designed to do --
provide mail delivery.

One stamp or twenty, the mail is still delivered.

Actually, that's another sore point. Our mail locally - both at residence
and PO Box - are delivered to other addresses routinely - at least one a
week.
Back to the 20 stamps..... you evidently have not mailed 20 or more packages
at one time. 2-3 stamps is fine.... 20 is a big much. Also, those
automated scale machines are an improvement, but if you have to mail more
than one, it takes for-###-ever to print out the labels.
PO automation needs a complete overhaul to bring them up into the 20th
century. 1990 is good enough for me. Let someone else bring them into the
21st.

In 1968, when I took a job for the POST OFFICE DEPARTMENT, human
labor was more than sufficient. Back then, we had a humongous volume
of mail that upon each and every day was processed and delivered in a
timely fashion. Progress really sucks when at this time there's less
'snail mail' in the works. Yet automation handles it with less
efficiency than the warm, breathing human bodies who years ago handled
much more mail with a hell of a lot accuracy and speed.
