It's ironic that as we discuss viruses, one invaded my computer last
night. As good as anti-virus software can be, some viruses can slip
by. Somehow I stumbled in a site that managed to sneak in a trojan
that would constantly throw a popup telling me I have a virus and to
download their software (at $39) to get rid of it. No matter what I
did to get rid of the popup, including making a dangerous trip to the
reg edit application and using apps like Avast, AdAware and Spybot,
nothing would touch it. Finally, I went to the MS site where they have
an application found in Windows Live Safety Center that did a thorough
scan and got rid of it once and for all. It took a good hour for the
scan to do it's thing, but it did it's thing much to my joy. If you
see anything that refers to a program called IEVirus, stay the hell
away from it. According to what I learned on other newsgroups that
deal with 'annoyances' like the aforementioned, it's a real bitch to
get rid of. While it's a no no to go to crack sites to get serial
numbers for shareware apps, it's playing with fire if one does. I
should be the first to know better; but even the best of us take risks
when we stick our noses where they shouldn't be stuck. For sure, the
nose is apt to be cut off as a result.
