I can't tell you how pissed off I get dealing with the post office. They pull this "working to improve" crap year after year when they raise their prices. Yet the delivery just gets worse and worse. They continue to raise business mail rates and, at the same time, shorten the hours when they accept business mail. We have to now sort into 12 sacks, when 2 years ago we sorted into 8 sacks. Std delivery went from a week to 2-3 weeks. Std rates went up 50%% in 2 years.
I don't call this "working to improve" -- I call it exploiting a monopoly.
It's never doing to stop until the govt (we) demand that the PO be returned to department status and kick the private investors out. Stop selling Looney Toons neckties, go back to printing one (1) type of stamp -- black and white. Of course we know what they are doing -- collectors buy up stamps and are never used. But this is not the function of government.
And one more thing....
Remember that post offices are closed on Labor Day .... and every other fricking holiday when the rest of us are working.

They were printing stamps in color before you were born. Exactly what is
the function of government?

Perhaps you need to change jobs, stop being a workaholic or just appreciate
that you are able to work. Any of those three options should remove the
concerns you have for other people getting holidays. I can assure you that
there are plenty of state holidays and religious holidays when others are
off that I am working. I don't begrudge them the time.

You quoted, Long, without quote characters. Don't do that.

You must have a great job, but your comments about my changing jobs are ignorant and pretty naive.
Do you have any comments about the other items in my post.... like the postal "service" selling items that compete with private small businesses, like Looney Tunes goods and shipping materials?
Also, being an insider, maybe you can tell me why the counters do not have 80-cent stamps on hand. The new improved postage calls for 80-cents for "large envelope" items up to 1 ounce -- including 9x12 envelope. Two ounces is 80+17; 3-ounces is 80+17+17, etc. What two denominations of stamps would a 10-year child say you should keep on hand?
Why would you think they don't have an 80-cent stamp? My guess is that most people will use 2 41-cent stamps rather than go into that god-awful lobby and wait for 30 minutes.
Have you ever bought anything at the counter? "Here's a dollar - I want 2 41-cent stamps:" "OK, first I have to lock my drawer, then run around the area looking for stamps and change." Then god forbid that you want to use a credit card.... there's another 15 minutes. Then there's the popular "do you want a delivery receipt, insurance and whatever other crap we can sell to you?"
The post office really needs to get back to the basic services AND come into the modern age.
There is no excuse for not having one machine in each office lobby that dispenses the exact amount of stamps that you ask for 24 hours a day. I'm not talking about the 50-question "self-service" units. They were an improvement, but you can't buy less than $1.00 with them. Also, they are SLOW AS MOLASSES. If you have more than 5 or so transactions, it resets and you have to start all over. A real poor example of automation.
Here's what you need to tell your friends at the PO to install in the lobby...
A machine that will let you enter (for example) 3.41 and get 3.41 of regular, garden variety stamps in whatever combination is required to give that amount.
Also, they need to have stamps of the following denominations on sale 24-hours in the lobby...1c, 5c, 10c, 25c, 50c, $1, $2, $3, $5, $10. That would take care of 99%% of mailings.
Also, this stupid "I can't pick up more than 16-ounces at a time" limit was put in place 10 years ago when the "unibomber" was sending stuff *** through UPS! That wasn't even the postal service! Why not drop the max weight to 0.1 ounces?
Any comments?

I do apologize. Not sure what I did to allow that to happen. I will be
more careful in the future.

Within reason, I agree with that concept. OTOH, many self-employed people
do take holidays and pretty much when they damn well feel like it.
> You've never been self employed and have no concept of the situation.
Not exactly true but close enough to not argue the point.

Christmas day here. Express mail and gift-wrapped packages. At least I got
to wear a Santa suit. Had that gig for years. It was a lot of fun.
