We all know the cost to mail a letter just went up by one cent, but
did you all know that at the same time, the cost of Priority mail as
much as nearly doubled?
I just mailed two identical packages via Priority mail - one going to
an address here in NYC, and one to Seattle. The NYC one cost $4.80,
and the Seattle one cost $8.25! Holy cow. Also, the receipt said NYC
was Zone 0, and Seattle is Zone 8.
So they've added some damned zoning system and increased the cost
depending on how far it's going. That's a major change from how they
used to do it, where it was the same cost no matter how far it was
going. If they had lowered the cost somewhat for packages that were
travelling a shorter distance it would be easier to swallow., but of
course they wouldn't do that. As usual, it's just a way to increase
revenue as much as possible, not more accurately reflect actual costs.

That is about as inaccurate a statement as you could make given the actual
facts.

Anything mailed to the ZIP Code area you live in is Zone 0. Seattle from
New York is Zone 8. No change today from what it was 20 or 30 years ago.
Zones have always been a factor in mailing.

So are you saying that the Priority Mail rate for a package that's 1-2
lbs has been different depending on how far in the US it's going since
the time that Priority Mail service first began, or that this began on
May 12th?

Priority Mail is unzoned up to one pound, zoned above one pound. It's
unweighed and unzoned if you use USPS-supplied packaging, but unless it
was small enough to cram into a flat-rate envelope (which is not
really designed for more than about 8 oz), using your own packaging was
cheaper.
Use of Click-n-Ship would have saved you another 15 cents.
Hey, you don't hear me bitchin' about Periodicals rates, do you? I
apologize to the newsgroup for my long-delayed rant, which I know you've
all been anticipating.

Since May 12, the pricing structure is more in line with actual cost given
weight and distance. Prior to that there was a certain amount of "average"
pricing at the lower weights. Current methods are as confusing to customers
as to many employees. Try explaining the difference between a large
envelope (8 1/2 x 11 with a few sheets of paper) and a parcel (8 1/2 x 11
but over 3/4 thick) to a customer that is not considering thickness as a
factor. Try explaining to a customer that prints out postage as on-line as
aflat rate box but puts the label on a non-postal box of the same size.

I guess I must not have mailed anything over one pound since they
started this zoning thing, since it's the first time I've seen the
zones mentioned on a receipt.
I did use USPS packaging, but it was not a flat-rate box. Why is it
more expensive to use USPS packaging than my own?

I really don't know if the information was there before or not. It is
possible they just recently started putting the zone information on the
receipt.

With regard to the box, the post office is guessing that mailers will be
sending 3-4 pounds, so that's where the rate was set. It's a marketing
thing to supply packaging and save mailers the bother of looking up the
zone.

If the U.S. mail service is the only mail service (more or less) in the
U.S., and everyone
person (more or less) use it, why in the world do they have to keep raising
prices? Just wondering.
